Tanglin Halt Food Centre

Tanglin Halt Food Centre just underwent an overhaul, which was a long time coming. The hawker centre was starting to look derelict and ramshackle. It just reopened so I though I'd check it out with the BF one night for dinner.

The trio of hawker centres, in 3 overlapping concentric circles, is known for its cheap and good food. I mean, prices still range between $2.50 to $3.50 for a bowl of noodles and 70 cents for local sweet desserts. Where else can you get such cheap hawker food nowadays?

The A1 western food stall that I used to frequent was closed by the time we arrived, so we went to Chef's Hainanese Western Food instead. Some would argue that this stall is better anyway.

We were famished so we got 3 dishes to share. The first was the Grilled Chicken Chop ($4.50), which was served with a side of baked potato with sour cream, baked beans and crinkle-cut fries. The chicken was succulent and well-marinated. But the homemade brown pepper sauce, whilst commendable, wasn't as good as the one at A1. It lacked the depth of the sauce at A1. They also ladled some kind of apple gravy over it as well. I didn't take to that, I felt the tangy and sweet apple sauce just clashed terribly with the savoury brown pepper sauce.

We also got the fried version, Chicken Cutlet ($4.50), which was juicy and tender on the inside but nicely crisped on the outside. Loved the meat, not so much the sauce.

The last was the Ham Omelette ($4.50), which was a generous portion of sliced picnic ham and fluffy eggs. I liked the nice char of the omelette.

We also got some Minced Pork Noodles ($2.50). (Well, I DID say that we were famished) Although it wasn't the best I've tried, it was ridiculously cheap for the quality and portion. The sauce was tangy and spicy, the flat egg noodles (mee pok) was done al dente, and the ingredients were generous. And they use fresh pork, no frozen pork after-taste here.
