나는 타이타이가 될 때 이 여자들을 그리워 할 것이야 😢 ======================= Da Shi Jia was another fantastic recommendation by my work tribe. It's the oddest thing, I must have walked past it a gazillion times and have never noticed it. If not for LP and Santo gushing about their white bee hoon, I wouldn't ever have known about it.    My only other graze with white bee hoon was sometime ago , requiring a trek up North to Sembawang at White Restaurant. Simply by virtue of its central location along Killiney Road, Da Shi Jia is already a win. That being said, the white bee hoon is indeed extraordinary.    Also, Singapore-style soupy prawn noodles have never really been my thing (I much prefer Penang's spicy porky version)...but Da Shi Jia 's rendition ...

======================   Guan's was a recommendation of my work tribe when we were trying to find more economical lunch options in the City Hall vicinity, so we wouldn't be so ridiculously broke come month's end #trialsandtribulationsofthelowSES.    LP, (in support of her argument that the West is, contrary to popular belief, awash with culinary gems) plugged their "very vinegar-y bak chor mee", having found their noodles at their (now defunct) Jurong East mothership scrumptious--Santo was sold on the "very vinegar-y" pitch, and I was more than persuaded by the purported walle...

#소확행 ======================= It's been a crazy December (Christmas cannot arrive soon enough!!) and both andmorefood and I have been buried under an impossible mountain of work. So when our schedules both aligned like the much feted great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn's "Christmas Kiss", we took the opportunity for a little respite from our crushing deadlines, have a languid meal and catch up with one another.  We were mulling lunch venues and I remembered The Big Kahuna waxing lyrical about Madam Fan ; and as his previous recommendation of Dempsey Cookhouse panned out marvelously, I was more than inclined to heed his suggestion. Fans of Hakkasan in London (including andmorefood who remembers having splurged many a year-end bonus at sai...

Soon Li Yong Tau Foo

특히 땡스기빙 때문에 남편이 내 생활에서 제일 좋은 것이에요 ❤   ===================   My earlier quest to hunt down dinner-time yong tau fu netted several recommendations for this hawker as well. Renowned for raising their shutters only upon the stroke of midnight, this intrepid stall is purportedly beloved by taxi drivers aplenty. And similar to the general rule (by implication) wherein the stall with the longest queue at any hawker centre must be first-rate, I thought it wise to heed the professed opinions of local taxi drivers, self-appointed proctors of the city's best local fare.  But as with life's generalities, there are exceptions to every rule. And this yong tau foo was just not as superb as its snaking lines or favourable reviews would suggest. It's not to say that the yong tau fu was terrible; it's simply middling...

Fatty Aunt Yong Tau Foo

다른 밤에 남편이 자면서과 호흡을해서 깨워 야 했어요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ  ================================   A dinner-time hankering for yong tau fu led to the discovery of Fatty Aunt Yong Tau Fu .    Most (well, the reputable ones anyway) yong tau foo stalls tend to sell out by late lunch (including old-reliables Cuppage Yong Tau Foo and Yi Xiang Feng at Ang Mo Kio ), so I leaned on word-of-mouth for recommendations because googling netted results that all shuttered by mid-afternoon.  How I've never known about this seasoned long-timer till recently, I have no idea!! Purportedly crazy popular with the hospital staff at SGH come lunch-time (it's a short hop and skip away from SGH's College Road entrance), this Silat Road veteran has been around for yonks. Another big plus: its Jalan Bukit Merah/Kampong Bahru locale is so very accessible as it's not too far from the city.  Fatty Aunt 's noteworthy for its boggling array of fried stuffed ingre...

Chui Xiang Kitchen

Image
Have I already mentioned that I love my foodie friends?? Because oftentimes we get stuck in a rut of only eating at the same few restaurants, it's such a refreshing change-up to have our food-obsessed friends steer us to their family's favourite haunts. In fact, many of our current go-tos started off as recommendations from our friends. Chui Xiang Kitchen is a cze char discovery courtesy of a colleague-turned-friend, who's quickly turning out to be some kind of savant with regards to unknown, underrated gems (he'd previously suggested the fantastic Gu Ma Jia ). It's apparently been around for years, but as with Gu Ma Jia, I'd have never known it was there if he didn't tell me about it. It's located along the same row of shophouse eateries as Casuarina Curry and Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood , and in fact, Chui Xiang Kitchen is right next to the latter. Frankly, I'm stumped as to why Ban Leong Wah Hoe appears so much more popular than Chui Xiang Ki...

The National Gallery will forever be known to me as the old Supreme Court. As one of the last batches of lawyers freshly minted in its courtrooms, I've fond memories hanging out in the bar-room of old. It was exuberant place of stimulating debate, sagely counsel, and just plain ol' salacious hearsay. The stately building, granted conservation status as an important heritage of Singapore, has been refurbished into an art museum and a popular destination for families with young 'uns. Not my scene, of course, but the slew of dining options at the National Gallery are quite the draw. Like I always say, food is what attracts Singaporeans near and far. You can build a mall in the godforsaken nowhere, but fill it with restaurants galore, and the crowds will come. Sitting next to Aura at the top floor of the National Gallery, Yan Restaurant appears incredibly popular: The restaurant was a full-house even on a typically sluggish Monday night for dinner. It's little wonder, ...
