Cocobolo Poolside Bar & Grill, Park Hotel Clarke Quay

Image
As it turns out, I don't actually have a breather. What I thought was a little breathing space turned out to be additional work within the same limited time constrains. And it doesn't help that my firm had a company trip to Phuket, which was such a disruption to my timelines. I'm actually regretting ( a little ) that I extended the trip by a couple of days (coz I've got so much work), but free wifi is a lifesaver. I got to do work all the way from Phuket. Ah well, working by the pool in the sun is infinitely better than slogging in the office. I think, everyone should have this option of working every once a while. It's awesome. We attended a good friend's birthday party at Cocobolo Poolside Bar & Grill at Park Hotel  recently. A tip is to wear anything breezy, light and thin, Singapore's humidity is just not great for any alfresco meals. Also, go there only an hour after sunset so the heat has time to dissipate from the ground. The barbec...

Suite 23, Park Regis

I cannot survive at work without my secretary. It's totally true. There was once she was laid up for several months when it was leading up to a trial, and I actually ended up crying at work because I was just completely overwhelmed without her. When I was just starting out, my secretary taught me much of the legal trade and procedure. She was one of the few people you never have to worry about asking "stupid questions". Although I spent 4 years in law school, I was no match for my secretary, who, with more than a decade of experience under her belt, was a lot more well-versed and familiar with legal procedure than I was, a fresh-out-of-school pupil/trainee lawyer. Go ask any lawyer, and they ( the honest ones, at least ) will tell you the same. Most of what we lawyers learned in school is completely useless and inapplicable in the working world. That's why I've got a lot of respect for our secretaries, the unsung heroes of our profession. So, for the one week that...

Morton's The Steakhouse

Image
The last time we ate at Morton's was on the Hubs' birthday in our first year together. It was again, an occasion for celebration, as the Hubs just got his first paycheck at his new-ish job, that we had dinner at Morton's with both CC and Beeps. Although they are my colleagues, and not the Hubs', they, together with their families, have become such close friends of ours. We always have a riot when hanging out. You'd think that I'd have exhausted all conversation with them, as I do see and talk to them on an almost daily basis, but noooooo, time just flew by when we were having dinner together. Before we realized it, we'd spent a whopping three and a half hours yakking away. Morton's is one of those old-fashioned classically American fine-dining steakhouses with a history spanning decades. The Singapore one is the first to be opened of its 6 international outlets, housed in the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel. To ensure continuity and familiarity, the...

Peach Garden Sichuan @ Miramar

Image
You know, everytime someone asks me whether it's stressful to be a lawyer, I always tell them that the work itself isn't what stresses me out, it's the clients. How good, or bad, a client is determines whether that particular file is 'painful' or not. We are, afterall, in the service line. We brought out one of our all-time favourite clients for a Chinese New Year luncheon at Peach Garden Sichuan , where we'd celebrated our firm's CNY Dinner last year . Although we hadn't done any work for him the past year, we were very pleasantly surprised with festive hampers that arrived at our doorstep just before the Lunar New Year. Really, it's clients like this that make us feel appreciated (and loved!).  As with most other Chinese restaurants during the festive period, only set menus were available for order. Lunch was a 7-course affair ($68++ per person) but because the portions were kept small, we didn't end up stuffed and bloated for the rest ...

Trisara Sunday Champagne Brunch, Phuket, Thailand

Image
It's been a long time since we indulged in brunch, and we were told not to miss out on Trisara's "legendary" Sunday Brunch (1,990 Baht per person for brunch only). While the selection at Trisara wasn't mind-boggling, it sure made up for the lack of variety with astoundingly high quality. All of their dishes were so good on their own that they could have been served up straight from the ala carte menu. Also, I loved that Trisara offered bite-sized portions of everything, just so their guests get to sample the entire buffet spread. Oh and get this, a roving pair of masseuse went round giving free head and shoulder massages to the diners. How's that for 6-star pampering?  A mix-and-match Salad Counter , with arugula, romaine lettuce, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, sliced almonds, pine nuts, julienned carrots and beetroot. Olive oil and thousand island were the duo of dressings available for your salads. While I'm not a fan of Smoked Salmon becau...
