The People vs Cheapo Food Bloggers and Bad English

This is a mini rant. Friends know that my one guilty indulgence is reading food blogs ("flogs"). ("guilty" because I read them at work...yes, my boss reads this flog too) And Singapore, despite its little size, has a very developed food blogging scene. A quick surf on the internet will prove that there is an inordinate number of flogs for a country as tiny as ours. I suppose it's really due to the connectivity of our island, its technologically savvy netizens and their insatiable appetite and love for food. But lately, I've noticed a worrying trend. There is a growing number of flogs that I've stopped reading entirely, simply because almost 90% of their posts are all based on invited tastings. Don't these cheapos ever pay for their meals anymore?!? The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, City Square Mall

The BF was craving a sweet treat, so we headed to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at City Square Mall to get some of their cakes. After 5pm, the prices of their cakes are slashed by 50% with any drink purchase. We got the Chocolate of a Thousand Leaves Cake ($5.90 usual price), which was decadent and indulgent. Light chocolate sponge is layered with fresh hazelnut chocolate cream. The best part, the chocolate wasn't too sweet and it didn't give me a headache. Coffee Bean does really good cheesecakes that are very affordable. I used to buy their cheesecakes everyday when I was on my cheesecake craze. The Cappuccino Cheesecake ($5.90 usual price) was a nice balance of aromatic coffee flavours with cheesy overtones. Plaza Brasserie Crab Buffet

A friend had read a rave review about Plaza Parkroyal's Annual Crab Buffet ($58 per adult for weekend dinners) and jio-ed us to partake in the crustacean devastation. While we had a great time with our friends, this buffet is exactly what I hate about buffets. You pay for the variety and not one iota of quality. While you do get 8 varieties of crabs in one sitting, I didn't think it was worth the money at all. Or the calories. I would have gotten more bang for my buck at any of the notable seafood chains like No Signboard or Long Beach or Jumbo . Just one crab from any of these seafood joints would have made for a much better dinner than all the 8 varieties of crabs at Plaza Brasserie. I wouldn't have walked away from dinner feeling completely unsatisfied. And I wouldn't have felt so cheated by the rave reviews of the bloggers who'd waxed lyrical about the "amazing" crabs here.
