Janggut Laksa vs 328 Katong Laksa, Queensway Shopping Centre

Queensway Shopping Centre , where locals flock to for all things sports and optical-related, is also known for good laksa. There are 2 laksa stalls, within a stone's throw of each other, both claiming to serve up the best. Both tout to be affiliates of world-famous Katong ones, and the accolades, writeups and publicity plastered all the utilitarian facades will attest to the fierce competition. Seating at both eateries is cramped and constrained, so dining is really a touch-and-go affair. Both are manned by efficient, if a little curt, bevy of staff, and so turnover is high. Good news for the 5-minute-on-average long line of diners waiting their turn. The menu is similarly limited, with laksa being the primary dish of choice, and its fixins' like otah and lime juice as regular side orders. Curry chicken, Chinese-style, is also a popular option. Da Paolo Ristorante, Holland Village

From today onwards, Da Paolo Ristorante will no longer be at Holland Village. Yesterday was its last day of operations as the lease at Chip Bee Gardens was up. If you still want a taste of the Da Paolo Group's classic Italian fare, you can hop on over to the casual pizza bar next door or its only other remaining fine dining outlet at Club Street. Addie and I snagged dinner reservations just before it closed, and we partook in a particularly leisure dinner spanning over 4 hours, chatting and slowing grazing our way through 4 plates and a bottle of wine. I think we're ready to be inducted into the slow food movement, no? The Filetto di Manzo ($48) was a perfectly done medium rare beef tenderloin, matched with sauteed baby spinach, whipped to an airy fairy potato puree and a pool of veal jus for extra flavour. JPot, Vivocity

The JPot steamboat concept isn't very different from Imperial Treasure's . Like Imperial Treasure, you get a whole bunch of condiments (sesame oil, chilli oil, soya sauce, chopped spring onions, peanut sauce and so on) to mix and blend your personalized dipping sauce (the fried crispy garlic is awesome!), and the soup bases incur a cost of their own. Also, the ingredients are equally fresh at both steamboat places, and the pricing is about the same as well. However, while I felt that Imperial Treasure wasn't worth the extra dollars, JPot seems a lot more value-for-money. Thing is, JPot is a lot more adapted to the local palate than Imperial Treasure. The varied soup bases, including but not limited to bak kut teh, laksa, tom yum, duck with salted vegetable, silky porridge and XO fish head are all already local favourites well-loved by Singaporeans.
