Thien Kee Hainanese Steamboat Restaurant

Dining at Thien Kee is like visiting the grandparents' during Chinese New Year. The minute you enter the restaurant, you're immediately bombarded with loud heartwarming greetings and well-meaning advice such as "You're getting skinnier, must eat more!", (which always makes my day). That's one of the many reasons why I love eating here. I mean, the folks have practically seen me grow up!

We got our usual "specialised" Steamboat Set ($25), consisting only prawns, fishballs, fish slices, pork slices, fish maw, vegetables and eggs (the usual set will include cockles, pork liver and squid). We also ordered a side of Tofu ($2.50) to supplement the steamboat. I love how fresh the food is here, there's none of those leave-out-in-the-open-for-you-to-pick serving concept here. They only serve you the food upon order.

I love the chicken-based stock, it's so good that you can begin drinking it from the first boil. It's delicate yet rich in flavour, and no, it's not MSG-induced.

We also ordered a main dish, their stellar Hainanese Pork Chops ($10). The pork, although fried to a crisp, manages to retain its juiciness. And the ketchup-based sauce is lipsmackingly good, with wilted red onions adding a tart sweetness to the gravy. I love picking the delectable baby green peas off the dish.
