Shima

Shima is probably one of the oldest and most well-known teppanyaki restaurants in Singapore. I've found that the quality of the food here has dropped substantially but it surprisingly remains popular. We had lunch here with the Fiance's family on New Year's Day and the place was packed to the brim.

We got the Teppanyaki Beef and Seafood Set ($45.90). This was quite pricey for the quality of food served. Also, service was a little slack, especially since this is considered a "first-tier" restaurant, we had trouble getting the wait staff's attention to re-fill our waters.

We started off with some Norwegian Salmon, simmered in Shima's salmon sauce, a proprietory mix of shoyu and teriyaki sauce. This was nice, the fish was not overcooked, still soft and tender, its rich flavour balanced out by the delicate shoyu.

The Shisamo Tempura and Ebi Tempura were disappointing. Too much batter, they were overcooked and the prawns were miserably puny.

The Salmon Sashimi was fresh and sweet enough, though it could be fresher.

I liked the simplicity of the Garlic Fried Rice, with its aromatic garlicky flavours, and eggy textures. I had seconds of this.

I also liked the Sauteed Beansprouts, crunchy and refreshing but savoury with its simple soy and garlic seasoning.

The Sauteed Prawns were not bad, prawns were fresh enough, but they were a little bland and lacking in sweetness.

The Sauteed Sesame Chicken was succulent and juicy, but a little tasteless. The Beef Tenderloin was alright, but not great and not as tender as I'd like.
