Orgo Bar & Lab, Esplanade

We decided to end off the last work day of 2010 in a huge way with L.A. Drinks at Orgo, an open-air bar situated at the rooftop of the Esplanade with an expansive view of the imposing CBD skyline and the gorgeous bay. Some of us left work on the dot to catch the sunset over the Marina Bay and the happy hour (which ends at 8pm). There are about 2 glass enclosures open for reservations (each houses about 15 people) if you aren't a fan of Singapore's balmy weather, so you can still enjoy the beautiful view and yet be sweat-free. Orgo, which is short for Organic Chemistry, serves organic food and adopts chemistry-like techniques in its cuisine and the mixology of the drinks.

As usual, we'll have finger food together with drinks (to soak up the alcohol of course!). We started off with the Parma Ham & Melon ($12), a classic Italian appetizer. Sweet fresh juicy melon was balanced with salty silky ribbons of parma ham and figs.

The Chorizo & Prawn Skewer ($12) with guacomole was the favourite tapas of the night, with crunchy sweet prawns interlaced with matured sausage.

The Bread Platter ($6) with aioli was well worth its price-tag, it was sweet, fresh and nicely toasted.

The Mushroom & Wagyu Beef ($16) was the other hit, the beef strips were incredibly tender and flavoursome.

The Magret de Canard Fumé et Foie gras Salade ($18) of Smoked Duck Breast served on Foie Gras with Lettuce was unexpectedly yummy. Duck was fresh, devoid of any gamey taste, and had a delectable smoky fragrance to it. The only thing I didn't like was the foie gras pate, but it's really a preference thing.

The Baked Garlic Clams ($11), while aromatic, also wasn't my thing. I'm not a fan of clams, you see.

The Seafood Paella ($32) was very very very good. Aromatic, moist and flavourful with the essence of seafood stock, this was also choc-a-bloc with prawns, huge succulent scallops, clams, squid and mussels.

The Passion Fruit and Vanilla Martini ($18) was really nice, tangy and sweet and fragrant all at the same time.

The Banana and Cinnamon Martini ($18) was also not bad, but I'm not really a fan of bananas.
