Jumbo Seafood, East Coast Seafood Centre
Of all my best men, Long is probably the one who works the hardest. Naturally, he's the most difficult to make a date with, because he's always working! Luckily, his appointments were suddenly cancelled one night and he found himself with a free schedule. So he called us out. We decided on Jumbo at East Coast for some crabs for dinner, obviously. Now that I think about it, we've never had a meal with Long without an order or two of crabs.
The East Coast Seafood Centre seaside branch of Jumbo is probably the most touristy, casual and crowded of all their outlets. This place is perpetually packed to the brim, even on a Monday night. The good thing about this place is that it has a large enough capacity to accommodate last-minute diners without reservations. The bad thing about the food here is that it consequently tastes mass-produced, like it's been served via a factory production line. Also, the portions seemed a little small for the price, in comparison to the other seafood places.
We got a Chilli Sri Lankan King Crab ($42 per kg) for the BF, who isn't a fan of black pepper like Long and I. The gravy was spicy and eggy, but a tad too starchy.
The Deep Fried Bun ($0.50 per bun) was pretty standard, crisp on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside.
Jumbo probably does one of the best, if not the best, renditions of Black Pepper Sri Lankan King Crab ($42 per kg). Crab was fresh and sweet, brushed with a kickass aromatic peppery marinade.
The Boiled Live Prawns ($6 per kg) were firm, sweet and big, complemented with the thick sweet black sauce with cut chilis dipping sauce.
We got the Scallops Wrapped in Yam Ring ($14) for the BF, who likes this dish. The scallops were succulent, but a little overfried, but the sweet mashed yam and crumbly crust complemented without overpowering the delicate scallops.
The Stir Fried Kailan with Chinese Mushroom ($14) was generic and too oily, but we still liked the juicy Chinese black mushrooms.
