Carpaccio, Lotte Department Store, Seoul, South Korea

One thing I always do during holidays is to check out the supermarkets and food basements of the major shopping malls of whichever country I visit. It really tells you the type of food that the people eat in that country. The groceries, the junk food, the fresh food, and the processed food, all give you a glimpse into their tastebuds and food inspirations. Plus, food basements are a wonderful way to get a full meal, you nibble little by little while browsing the selections available at the many standalone shops filling the food basements.

While milling around the food basement at Lotte Department Store, we chanced upon this really pretty standalone shop selling fusion salads and sushi. Looking at the many skinny women milling about this shop, it is obvious that they cater to the health-conscious. I got the Crab Meat Mayo Sushi Roll (5,000 Won), which really wasn't half bad. The mayonnaise added a touch of sweetness without overpowering the shredded crab meat. Cucumbers provided a refreshing crunch to the soft sushi.

The store front. It apparently has a fairly successful franchise, we've seen another franchise in the food basement of the COEX Mall.
