Korean Restaurant, Lotte World, Seoul, South Korea
Lotte World has a bunch of different food streets specialising in Japanese, Korean or Chinese cuisine.
We chanced upon the Korean Food Street, lined with nameless Korean restaurants. Actually, they had names, even if each of them had the same exact, generic name. They were all named "Korean Restaurant". Really.
After getting rejected by several restaurants (I've realised that Koreans tend to sound rude and aggressive, even if they don't intend to be. Speaking in their native tongue, they generally sound like they are barking at or scolding each other. Really. Go watch a couple of undubbed Korean drama serials, and you'll understand what I mean.), we got directed to the one and only Korean Restaurant that sells kimchi stew.
We really thought the food would turn out fantastic because it was such a hole-in-the-wall place but we were so wrong. The food was standard at best, and lacklustre. The Kimchi wasn't very fresh, it was limpid and weak.
The Pickled Beans fared better than the kimchi, salty and mushy, they really whet the appetite.
The sambal-ish Preserved Anchovies were also not too bad, but it was very soggy.
The Kimchi Jjigae(5,000 Won) was a slightly bastardised version of the traditional Korean kimchi stew, with the addition of sliced hotdogs. This was very weak and watered down.
The Soondubu Jjigae (5,000 Won) seafood beancurd stew was better, with a little more depth and spice. Still, it was like drinking spiced plain water. The squid was also overdone, chewy and tough.
The Doenjang Jjigae (5,000 Won) was the non-spicy version of the Soondubu Jjigae, equally watered down.
