Every trip back from Seoul is chracterised by a bumpy turbulent flight, and this trip was no different. In fact, it was worse this time because of the numerous rain clouds. It actually got so bad it actually felt like we were plunging in the air, like being on the Viking Ship ride in the Lotte World theme park. Obviously the turbulent flight took longer than expected and we touched down in Singapore a full half an hour later than anticipated.
One major gripe I had about our "world-class" Changi Airport was that the information on the restaurant opening times is inaccurate. Despite the information expressly given by the signboards stating that most of the restaurants were open till 11pm, they were, in fact, NOT. We relied on the inaccurate signboards and lugged our heavy bulky luggage around the airport, only to realise that restaurants like Lerk Thai and Crystal Jade were already closed, before 10pm no less! Seriously, a "world-class" airport would at the very least, have ensured the accuracy of restaurant opening times because passengers arrive at all hours of the day and night, usually requiring sustenance.
We left the airport and headed to Jane Thai Food, which opens till 4am, for some steaming hot Tom Yum Goong ($10), sans coriander and spring onions. This was classic Thai comfort food, and spicy to the hilt. It was actually so spicy it burned its way down my throat. And continued burning my tummy the entire night. The prawns weren't very fresh though, a little powdery in texture. But the straw mushrooms and spicy soup somewhat made up for the lack of freshness of the prawns.
The Mixed Vegetables ($6) was a colourful medley of textures, with crunchy capsicums, baby corn, and carrots, softened cabbage and black fungus, soft mushrooms, broccoli, kailan, drenched in a rich oyster sauce gravy.
The Pork Stir-fried with Basil ($10) was almost a vegetable dish, with the liberal addition of long beans. This was nicely peppery, a distinctive accent of the herb.
The Thai Beef Noodle Soup ($5) was a generously portioned steaming hot bowl of slurp-worthy smooth flat rice noodles. The broth was rich with the essence of beef, robust and heady, and beef was nicely tender, albeit a little chewy. The addition of kangkong provided some bitter crunch to the rich soup.
