La Villa

La Villa, an Italian eatery owned by the same people of Senso, Spizza and La Nonna, is a treasure trove hidden away from the bustle of city life. The food here is homely but elegant, with classic Italian pastas, pizzas, and grilled seafood and meats. The restaurant, spanning an outdoor patio, and airconditioned interiors for dining, a bar area for drinks and chilling, has a romantic and natural ambience.

We liked it here. It seemed so quaint and secluded, and it had a very charming appeal about it. The food was generally good, and better than the average. Best of all, the price points of the food are cheap(er) than you'd expect of an establishment like this.

We started off with some Parma Ham ($19) with Italian burratina cheese and rucola salad. I loved the contrast of the soft, almost fluffy pink ribbons of salty fatty ham against the peppery crunch of the rucola leaves.I wasn't a fan of the burrata (as a matter of preference) though it was good in quality, mild, soft and a wonderful complement to the bread basket.

The Risotto ($24) with wild mushroom, parmesan and truffle oil, was like eating a very rich and earthy mushroom soup.If you sniffed the al dente rice very hard, you get a faint whiff of truffle-scented oil infused into the dish. Otherwise, the addition of the truffle oil was negligible.

The Fiance is still cutting out carbs, so he got the Classic Meat Platter ($36) choose a combination of chicken breast, lamb shoulder rack, pork rack, beef sirloin, pork and lamb sausages, served with mediterranean vegetables. It was such a mistake to order a meat dish in an Italian restaurant. The dish is costly, yet the meats were dry and tasteless.Even the liberal addition of chilli flakes couldn't impart sufficient flavour into the meat. We'll stick to pizzas and pastas next time round.

All grill platters are served with a choice of a side dish, so we got the Potato Puree, which is basically mashed potato. This was commendable but fairly ordinary.

I liked the complimentary Bread Basket, soft, warm rolls and crisp toasty biscuits.

The facade of the picturesque restaurant glistening in the setting sun, housed in the what used to be River Valley Primary School.

The Prof says : Truffle and Risotto do not make a good combo.

I don't agree. Truffles go really well with Italian food, particularly cream-based ones.
