La Nonna, Holland Village

La Nonna, translated into "Grandmother", is the casual, homestyle trattoria owned by the people at Senso (the fine dining Italian restaurant along Club Street that's favoured for high-power business luncheons and dinners). The company also owns Spizza, the first and only pizza joint that delivers the wood-fired thin-crust pizzas, so you know their pizzas are bound to be good. The feel here is decidedly understated and warm, whilst the food served is hearty and traditional.

Cho and I met up for our monthly meet-up to catch up over pizzas and pastas, while he's still based in Sg. He's moving to Hongkong soon to be with his wife. Sob! All my close friends are slowly but surely moving away!

We started off with Rucola Salad ($16) for some greens, with sauteed shrimps and lemon dressing. This would have been a lot more palatable with a lot less lemon and a lot more crispy garlic slices. Shrimps provided a crunchy savoury counterfoil to the bitter crisp rucola.

I had the Risotto ($18) with porcini mushrooms and carnarali risotto. This was very hearty and muted, flavoursome while being delicate, with an al dente bite to each discernible grain.

La Nonna has a rotating specials menu, casually written on the chalkboard prominantly displayed in the restaurant. We shared the daily special of Lobster and Crabmeat Ravioli ($30) with Arrabiatta sauce. The sweet lobster and freshly shredded crabmeat were surprisingly not overwhelmed by the spicy tomato pasta base. This wasn't the best I've tried, but it was simple and uncomplicated.

The Calzone ($19) with tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms and ham was very well done. It was crisp, ingredients were plentiful and  the thin crust was fired to a smoky perfection.

Be careful when you break into the pizza, hot air accumulated in the folded pizza during grilling will gush out in a whoosh when you cut open the pizza.

Complementary bread basket. I liked that this was soft and fresh.

Thanks for the tip oysterdiaries! They looked tempting on the menu but we were too stuffed by our starters and mains to try the desserts!
