White Box, Phuket, Thailand

The Fiance read reviews that the White Box serves one of the best desserts in Phuket so we decided a visit was in order. After dinner at Baan Rim Pa, we headed to the White Box, a white-washed beach-facing restaurant just 5 minutes away. This was once a beach-front house, converted into a minimalist, mediterranean restaurant that's both stylish and modern.

The thing about taxis in Phuket is that the same taxi driver will send you to a destination, wait patiently for you to finish your meal, then send you back to your hotel. All for a very reasonable price. We had the same taxi pick us up from our hotel, send us to Baan Rim Pa, wait for us to have dinner, then send us to the White Box, wait for us to have dessert and drinks, before sending us back to the hotel. The tip is always to negotiate the price of the entire trip with the taxi driver before hopping into one because taxi drivers don't charge according to a meter, even if they have one in the taxi. Don't worry, the rates are pretty standard (if in doubt, always check with your concierge the standard rates before negotiating with the taxi driver) and we haven't encountered one who tried to rip us off.

The Chocolate Fondant (250THB) with butter caramel sauce is their signature dessert, and a must-try. The bittersweet chocolate is served warm, and a slab of the dessert fork yields a rich molten chocolate centre that oozes chocolate heaven. Complemented with cold vanilla ice-cream and bits of dried fruits, this was easily one of the best desserts I've ever tasted.

The White Box "Gourmand" (250THB) with red fruit coulis layered upon mascarpone mousse on crispy crumbs is similar to a trifle dessert, with the different layers providing a contrast of textures and flavours. This was nice, but really, the fondant was "da bomb".

We also got a starter of Pan Fried Scallops (420THB) with balsamico, rocket salad and parmesan cheese. This was a little rubbery and too tart, as balsamic vinegar was added too liberally. The scallops would have been better seasoned simply with salt and pepper.

The obligatory Bread Basket which we wish they didn't bother with. The bread rolls were tough and hardened and the bread sticks were too soft and full of air.

The accompanying butter and dips.

As we didn't have to drive, we both indulged in a little alcohol with the Mojito (280THB) rum, brown sugar, mint leaves, lime and topped with soda water. This was a little like Zouk's long island tea, a little too much business and too little pleasure (read: it was too strong and too bitter, perfect for people who want to get high quickly without needing to enjoy the process of getting high).

The appetizer of Olives, which I loved. I love olives, with their distinctive nuttiness and flavour.
