J.Co Donuts & Coffee, Raffles City
Donuts were one of those food fads that hit our little island back in 2007. You couldn't walk 100 meters without passing a donut shop, usually with a 2-hour-long queue of customers. There are a lot less donut shops now, but J.Co, a huge chain of coffee and donuts shops originating from Indonesia, has somehow managed to stay in the cut-throat food & beverage business in Singapore.
I'll admit that I'm a fan of Krispy Kreme, or KK, as it's affectionately referred to. In comparison, J.Co's donuts are a lot softer and airy. I prefer the substantial texture of KK's firm but fluffy donuts, with its characteristic semi-hardened, crystallised, sugary glaze crust.
The Glazzy ($1.40) is an airy and very soft deep-fried flour dough with sweet honey glaze. It's very sweet, almost saccharine. This is strictly for the sweet-toothed.
Donuts and coffee are synonymous, and naturally, the Espresso ($3.20 for single shot or $3.90 for double shot) here is really not bad, robust, strong and heady.A shot of pure energy before heading back to work.
