Lotus Restaurant, Phuket, Thailand

Lotus is the one restaurant that I always eat at whenever I go to Phuket. The seafood is always fresh and cheap (well, compared to Singapore, at least). The restaurant is right on the beach so you get to hear the waves crashing on the sand and the gorgeous sunset, but you don't get sand in your feet because the restaurant is on solid ground. The ambience is romantic, what with all the candlelight, but still casual and relaxed.

As usual, the Fiance got the Lobster Thermidor (3,300THB per 1kg), with egg yolks and milk baked together with the lobster, and topped with sizzling melted mozzarella cheese. This was great for the first few bites, but after a while, we both got a bit "jelat" and got a dairy overload from all that cheese and milk and egg yolks.

I love love LURVE the Fried Garoupa with Garlic (1,100 THB per 1kg), soft moist and flaky white meat paired with fragrant crisp garlic bits for aroma and flavour.

Most of the seafood available in Phuket are huge, except for the crabs. The crabs sold in Phuket restaurants are typically small and tiny. The Curry Crab (1,100THB per 1kg) is no different, so there's little meat. The saving grace is the luscious eggy, chili-oil and garlic infused gravy. I practically licked the plate clean.

The Tom Yum Goong (160 THB) is a lot more watered down than I remembered. While the prawns are fresh and sweet, the soup is really quite weak and lackluster. I guess this is a natural development when a restaurant is discovered by Caucasians who cannot take spice.
