Jane Thai Food

Update September 2016: Jane Thai has moved east to 41 East Coast Road, at 6966 5187, open Mons to Sat from 11.30am to 2.30pm; 5.30pm to 10.30pm

We'd read about this hole-in-the-wall Thai establishment. It's located on the 4th floor of the arguably seedy and infamous Orchard Towers, just outside the "Crazy Horse" disco. It's best to have an early dinner as there's less people then. The crowd throngs it later in the night from 9pm onwards, a spill-over effect from the many Thai discos and massage palours in the mall.

This is one eye-opening place, as you dine alongside lady-boys whose ladylike mannerisms, bootilicious sashays and "man-made" looks will put most "authentic" women to shame.

We ordered the Seafood Pad Thai ($5), which was a tad sweeter than the usual variety. We had to add more chili flakes and powder to spice it up. Still, the noodles were soft and seafood fresh.

The Mixed Vegetables ($6) was simple but tastefully done.

The Stir-Fried Basil Pork ($10) was one of the better ones around. Heady, spicy and robust.

The Tom Yum Kung ($10) was fiery and bold, and the generous ingredients of crunchy prawns and straw mushrooms made this soup a hit.

The Olive Fried Rice ($10) was also done very well, it was balanced and flavourful, with mashed olives adding its signature purple hue and nutty accents.

The Fish Cakes ($10) was a huge disappointment though, it was chewy and rubbery. We didn't finish this.

The Signature Thai Iced Tea and Lime Juice. The tea was thick and rich, exactly like the ones in Thailand.

The tiny shop front, with musical entertainment from the "Crazy Horse" disco next door blaring top 40s and easy listening R&B grooves.
