Crystal Jade Kitchen, Great World City
Ernie came back for a weekend visit so our usual Saturday lunch date was back on. Mr Ernie-the-Smarty-Pants made a reservation at Imperial Treasure at Great World City for 1pm, yet told me to turn up at 12noon. Obviously, the restaurant wasn't able to accommodate us at noon, so we had to switch to Crystal Jade Kitchen on the 3rd floor for lunch instead. (I could have slept in for another hour! *#$^%~@!)
I was famished by the time he arrived (late, as usual), so we ordered quickly. First up was the ubiquitous Steamed Pork with Crab Roe Dumpling "Siew Mai" ($4.30). This was classically good, fresh prawns and pork with a bouncy texture.
Next was the equally ubiquitous Steamed Shrimp Dumpling "Ha Kau" ($4.50). Today's batch was disappointing, the flour skin was too thick and the artificially turgid prawns tasted a little too alkaline.
We also ordered a couple of Steamed Rice Rolls, one with BBQ Pork ($3.50), and the skin was a tad too thick. The BBQ pork was honeyed, tender and sweet though.
The other Rice Rolls with Dough Fritters ($3.50) fared better, the dough fritters were crispy, and the silky rice rolls was thin and smooth.
Of course Ernie had to get his favourite Sauteed Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk ($18.80), deshelled for his convenience. Crunchy prawns with a cheery salted egg yolk crust, this was lovely.
We also ordered his other favourite meat, Beef Sauteed with Mushrooms ($17.80). Nicely tender beef fried with white button mushrooms in a luscious oyster sauce gravy.
We also got the Deep Fried Silver Fish with Pepper & Salt ($7), which was very soggy. Either it was left out in the open too long or the fish was wet when put in the deep fryer. Either way, I didn't like it.
Yes, we dutifully got our greens as well, Sauteed Spinach ($10.80) for iron and fibre. This was simple, not too salty and very yummy.
We might have ordered a little too much. The old lady at the next table nearly popped out her eyes when she saw the amount of food on our table.
