Ah Chiang's Porridge, Tiong Bahru

Ah Chiang's Porridge makes a perfect poster child of the pitfalls of fame. Laurels may have once been heaped on its charcoal-boiled Cantonese congee, but the porridge served up these days is pedestrian at best. For sure, Ah Chiang's porridge has lost whatever luster it used to have.

We should have known the second we parked next to the coffeeshop. The porridge stall operates like a dispassionate production line factory, and it quickly becomes evident that commercialization has hit this may-have-once-been-good porridge stall badly. The Hubs had, very astutely, pointed out that, in an aging estate like this, the lack of senior citizen-type-patrons is a telling sign that the food can't be very good. The fact that I actually think that I can whip up a tastier bowl of porridge than this says volumes.

The Chicken Porridge ($3.75) may be smooth, but it's terribly insipid.

Shredded chicken is used here, and this was disappointingly tasteless and dry.It would have been much tastier if fresh sliced chicken was cooked into the gruel.

The Pork Porridge ($3.75) fared even worse. The minced pork was barely passable, and worse still, the sliced pork was horrendously off-putting. These reeked of frozen age, despite its website alleging that they pride themselves on the "freshest fish and pork". Suffice it to say, we didn't finish it.

definitely don't. it'll be a waste of good money. but, my review's based on this original one at tiong bahru, so the tpy outlet may be better (though, i highly doubt that).

for porridge, esp late-night pork porridge, go to bedok north, fengshan hawker centre, the chai chee pork porridge is AWESOME. some nights, i actually get the hubby to drive all the way there to dabao supper!
