Marks and Spencer

Marks and Spencer are infamously expensive, but every once a while, some of their items go on discount, which makes purchasing from their food hall a lot less indulgent.

As it turned out, their Jaffa Cakes were on discount (usual price $5.50, discounted price $4.90), so obviously we snapped up several boxes of them. Ernie swears by them, he actually buys 6 boxes of these a week, discount or not. Dark chocolate spongy biscuits with a layer of marshmallows. These are decadently delicious and perfect with a hot cuppa joe.

Queensway Shopping Centre , where locals flock to for all things sports and optical-related, is also known for good laksa. There are 2 laksa stalls, within a stone's throw of each other, both claiming to serve up the best. Both tout to be affiliates of world-famous Katong ones, and the accolades, writeups and publicity plastered all the utilitarian facades will attest to the fierce competition. Da Paolo Ristorante, Holland Village

From today onwards, Da Paolo Ristorante will no longer be at Holland Village. Yesterday was its last day of operations as the lease at Chip Bee Gardens was up. If you still want a taste of the Da Paolo Group's classic Italian fare, you can hop on over to the casual pizza bar next door or its only other remaining fine dining outlet at Club Street. Addie and I snagged dinner reservations just before it closed, and we partook in a particularly leisure dinner spanning over 4 hours, chatting and slowing grazing our way through 4 plates and a bottle of wine. I think we're ready to be inducted into the slow food movement, no? The Filetto di Manzo ($48) was a perfectly done medium rare beef tenderloin, matched with sauteed baby spinach, whipped to an airy fairy potato puree and a pool of veal jus for extra flavour. The People vs Cheapo Food Bloggers and Bad English

This is a mini rant. Friends know that my one guilty indulgence is reading food blogs ("flogs"). ("guilty" because I read them at work...yes, my boss reads this flog too) And Singapore, despite its little size, has a very developed food blogging scene. A quick surf on the internet will prove that there is an inordinate number of flogs for a country as tiny as ours. I suppose it's really due to the connectivity of our island, its technologically savvy netizens and their insatiable appetite and love for food. But lately, I've noticed a worrying trend. There is a growing number of flogs that I've stopped reading entirely, simply because almost 90% of their posts are all based on invited tastings. Don't these cheapos ever pay for their meals anymore?!?
