Prego

It's been eons since we last dined at Prego and truffles are currently in season. With the use of the Far Card at Prego, sampling the extravagant fungi has never been more affordable.

The Risotto al Tartufo Nero con Uovo in Camicia ($36), an appetizer of a slow poached egg with black truffle risotto, caught our eye. Though slated as an appetizer, it was a heftily portioned main-sized, so it was really very much value-for-money. This was very very good. Risotto was al dente, rich and creamy, egg was perfectly poached, and the truffle was intoxicating.

The Strozzapretti ($34), with Italian pork sausage and mixed mushrooms in a spicy tomato sauce seemed, at first, ordinary, but on second and third mouthfuls, turned out to be quite decent, with a punchy flavour. There was a nice contrast in textures of the juicy mushrooms, chewy pasta and chunkily textured sausages.

The real letdown was the Pollo Arrosto ($36), a whole rotisserie chicken seasoned with fresh herbs and sided by grilled asparagus and potato wedges. It was as it looked, uninspiring, insipid, tasteless and worse of all, dry. The watery, too piquant red wine sauce also arrived with a film of crud floating atop. Suffice it to say, we didn't finish this.

The humongous complimentary Bread Box, which totally filled us up, but for good reason. The melange of breads and biscuit sticks was fresh out of the oven, and delicious.

A pot of chilled tomato compote spiced with basil strips was a wonderful complement to the breads. Tangy and sweet and juicy, this was irresistible.
