Mid-Autumn Mooncakes, The China Club

The China Club has, by far, the most uniquely chinoiserie (read: cheena-fied) mooncake packaging. A towering oriental pagoda hides functional drawers; the box is pretty enough to be re-purposed to house your knick-knacks.
 


The traditional mooncakes, filled with white lotus paste, are moist and delicate, each encompassing a single salted yolk and freckled with melon seeds for a textural contrast.


For a more unique, but still very much Chinese-style festive treat, the Lotus Paste with Chicken Bak Kwa Mooncake, studded with a melange of nuts, is crunchy, moist and chewy.

Imperial Treasure Steamboat Restaurant, TripleOne Somerset

Friends will know that I'm really particular when it comes to steamboats. In my view, the soup stock has to be rich in depth, without the overwhelming taste of MSG, and yet delicate enough for the additional flavours of the ingredients to seep into the soup. As for the ingredients, they have to be fresh, because par-boiling requires incredibly fresh food. My favourites are the chicken soup-based stock at Thien Kee and fish bones-based soup stock at Nan Hwa Chong , both of which have very good soup stocks, with nary a whiff of MSG or milk-sweetened additives. We've always liked the food at Imperial Treasure, be it the Cantonese cuisine at their Nan Bei group of restaurants, or the Xiao Long Bao arm offering Shanghainese or Beijing cuisine. Hainanese Delicacy Chicken Rice, Far East Plaza

Everyone who's a "Far East kid" (that's what school-going kids who hang out at Far East Plaza are called) will be familiar with Hainanese Delicacy Chicken Rice , aka "The Far East Chicken Rice". Sure, there's not just this one particular eatery selling this local fare, but this is by far the most popular, and somewhat famous. It's possibly the only "well-known" and lauded local hawker cuisine present in the Orchard Road vicinity. Just ask the long line of hungry diners snaking outside this tiny eatery. Because the small hole-in-the-wall eatery can only accommodate up to 50 diners at any one time and no reservations are taken, this is quite the eat-and-go place. Any lingering pauses after your meal is finished are mete with impatient stares from the long queue of people waiting outside the eatery.
