Violet Oon's Kitchen

We commemorated our last weekend at our Bukit Timah rental by heading to Violet Oon's for brunch. You wouldn't think that a Peranakan place like this could do western breakfast classics this well, but everything we ordered was really excellent. This casual bistro, with the warmest of staff, is truly one of the best things about Bukit Timah estate. (here's hoping the owner(s) read(s) this: Violet Oon's Kitchen needs to open another branch in Orchard, like pronto!)

The Big Breakfast ($21), with a grilled sausage, mushrooms sautéed in garlic butter, fried potatoes, a couple of eggs sunny side-up, tomato roasted with melted cheddar, and bacon-spiked baked beans, was pretty damn good, especially the buttery brioche. This was the next best thing to the inch-thick ones at Wild Honey.

The Bangers and Mash ($19) with a trio of big fat sausages of the cumberland, chorizo and bratwurst varieties, were set atop properly hand-mashed potatoes and slathered with a caramelized onion and red wine reduction. Absolute bang-on fabulousity.

Ah, this is the primary reason why we're here so often the staff know us by name, the Pulut Hitam ($9) served piping hot with icy vanilla ice-cream, wonderfully balanced and just the right amount of sweet.

so glad this is good. can't believe I haven't come here yet!

I'm going to try that pulut hitam like a snob though, my grandmother makes a brilliant one.
