Clos Pasoh

====================   Notwithstanding my longstanding policy of not visiting new restaurants until they've passed their first birthday, I made an exception for Clos Pasoh . My birthday twin Syl and I had spent our birthdays in confinement last year and this year we really wanted to dress up, go out, and live it up, have a ball. But what with the constantly evolving lockdown rules, and with what they say about beggars being choosers, Clos Pasoh was a providential opening in a sea of restaurant full-houses across the board.   Being the first week of its official launch date, the restaurant was a bustling hub choc-a-bloc with beautiful people and the who's who of movers and shakers. I was surprised at how first-rate the service was. Most restaurants typically need time to iron out ...

================   Mask-wearing may be a slight hindrance (or to some, a torture device imposing on civil liberties tantamount to a war crime) but I love how mask-wearing has granted me a sense of anonymity. Not that I'm ever in danger of getting mobbed, but it's refreshing to go out in public without having to acknowledge any acquaintances on the street (I don't know about you, but I reallyyy detest small talk 😖). And, this may be entirely psychological, as I've also noticed that mask-wearing has seemed to make people less inclined to approach one another (although the introvert in me loves that hah). But, the biggest up...

===================   I'd never would have known of Gaston if not for a girlfriend's insta-story. She'd posted the most tantalizing photo of their poached eggs, and if you know me, you'd know how much I love brinner-type egg dishes. A loved-up emoji like, accompanied by a gushing compliment for said story, responded by way of an enthused offer to return to said bistro, followed by an eager acceptance by way of a double date, and we were set for an egg-cellent Easter weekend dinner.  Dinner turned out a smidge shy of a slam dunk: the starters were bang-on, but the mains were a mixed bag. I loved the chicken, but the much-hyped beef bourguignon was forgetta...

새해에도 뚱뚱해질 것 같아요 😰   ==============   The local F&B landscape is, under the best of ordinary circumstances, already harsh, but Covid-19 lockdowns and the ensuing recession seriously pummeled the restaurant industry. Like I told friends, 2020 was one kind of formidable battering ram. To nobody's surprise but everyone's shock, many notable restaurants were put out of business this year. To be perfectly frank, I wasn't particularly upset at many of the closures (survival is for the fittest after-all), save for Antoinette. I'd loved their pastries and it was my go-to whenever I felt like macarons, La Durée having exited Singapore after a short foray in our city state and Pierre Hermé not looking like it was ever setting u...

Atout

==================================== Atout is another restaurant from which we've repeatedly picked up take-out: we usually pop by after picking up dinner at Culina. This was a dinner some time back with Lips (whom I miss terribly) where we ditched the husbands and painted the town red (okay okay... when I say "paint the town", I really mean we just had a nice, adult dinner at a nice adult restaurant...but hey, we actually stayed out past 11pm (what a shocker), and also when I say "red", I mean we wore red lipstick because, you know, going out to dinner amounts to a special occasion at my age. #boringauntielife #middleage...

Le Binchotan

Image
You know, the best thing about working in the CBD, is the easy access to the mind-boggling variety of dining options. So...lately, we've (slowly but surely) been hitting up the gamut of restaurants in the Telok Ayer/Amoy Street enclave, and Le Binchotan was another restaurant that I finally got to tick off my to-eat list. The late-night speakeasy gastrobar serves French-Japanese cuisine. To wit, the painting at the entrance of Le Binchotan , featuring the Effiel Tower set against the backdrop of a rising sun, is a gorgeously brilliant commission of the restaurant's provisions. Note that while its address stipulates an Amoy Street address, entry is through Gemmill Lane, as with Gemmills and the fabulous Maggie Joan's . The galley of a restaurant was a veritable who's-who of pleb-ville. There was a gaggle of air stewardesses who were determined to make themselves heard over the piped-in background house music, it wasn't even a challenge to hear the entirety of t...

Taratata Bistrot

Image
So, we're still on a quest to find the best steak frites in Singapore. Taratata Bistrot was a recommendation by a friend. She likes their cooking, which is traditional and straightforward, and its warm, cosy atmosphere. And indeed, the food at Taratata was terrific; it was nothing too fanciful or newfangled, just simple, honest fare coupled with great service. It seems the French community concur; we were about the only locals in the bistro overrun by a sea of French expats. A must-try, the Grilled Foie Gras ($38), sinfully decadent but oh-so-good, was contrasted against the caramelly sweetness of a baked apple tart and morello cherry sauce. A couple of black truffle shavings added oomph and fragrance. The house-made Pork Rillettes ($18), sided by crusty bread and pickles, was homey and rustic. Absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of fat and meat, that went down as one of my favourite rillettes to date. The Roasted Rack of Lamb ($5...
