Jay and I were headed to the NUS Law School for duty at the Careers Fair when we stopped by River Valley for a quickie lunch at Teochew Cuisine Restaurant . This was Jay's recommendation for good fish soup. While I usually trust Jay's fairly refined taste in food, this turned out to be a dud. The main gripe of lunch was that the air-conditioned area of the eatery reeked of ammonia-tinged sewage and/or sour rancid rotting food. That was enough to put us off quite a lot already. Then we realized that the staff were all (that we could see anyways) PRCs. I don't usually stereotype but this was quite the unfortunate case of putting two and two together, a staff full of PRCs and the ridiculously smelly restaurant. But I still wanted to give this place a chance. So, we sat in the outdoors area, which had wet spots because the fridge containing the canned drinks was leaking. Ferragamo was having a preview sale before the GSS (Great Singapore Sale) so I got a few of my colleagues, all HUGE Ferragamo fans, to Ion Orchard after work to check it out. I love sales, especially the ones at Ferragamo. Their items are usually slashed by up to 50%, which is A LOT because you get to save a few hundred bucks. Just be sure to go on the first day of their sales, because their shoes sell out pretty fast. Unless you have unusually large or small feet, the sizes you want will definitely be sold out. And yes, in case you were wondering, we each got a few pairs of shoes. I was a very happy bunny that day (hey, they don't call it retail therapy for nothing). After shopping, we went to Canton-i for a late dinner. It's associated with Dragon-i, a fairly large chain of Chinese restaurants in Malaysia focusing on Shanghainese, Szechuan and Beijing cuisine. One of my colleagues had raved about the pastas at Bonta, so the BF and I checked it out for dinner one evening. The food was indeed good, but we both had one big gripe about the restaurant. The service was pleasant enough (no service staff was unpleasant, in fact, they were pretty sweet and nice), but the chef seemed very biased. I'm not sure which chef it was that night, but I'm pretty sure he was a chef because he was wearing a chef's white jacket. Why do I say that the chef's service seemed biased? We noticed that he only entertained the Caucasians. We saw that he bypassed the Asians, and only spoke to the Caucasians. He was asking about their meals, recommending vinos, informing the specials. Only to the Caucasians. Maybe it was a one-off incident or maybe the chef was more comfortable speaking to Caucasians because he's Caucasian himself, but it sure looked like the chef was very preferential in his service standards to the Caucasians. The first time I ate here was when LJ brought me here eons ago. He had raved extremely enthusiastically about the creamy butter crabs here, and I remembered thinking that the seafood was no big deal. Since then, the Paradise Group has expanded exponentially to include 2 seafood restaurants (Seafood Paradise), 4 restaurants serving local heritage cuisine (Paradise Inn) and 1 fine-dining Cantonese restaurant (Taste Paradise) in its growing repertoire of restaurants. Such expansion must imply good food so I felt a revisit was in order. I therefore choose the Paradise Group of restaurants when I redeemed my credit card points with UOB. The BF and I made reservations for 8.30pm in the air-conditioned area at the Defu Lane branch. We got there at 8.20pm, and they informed us that the only available tables were in the non-air conditioned area. We're not too fussy, so we obliged.
