Lotus Restaurant, Phuket, Thailand
I love Phuket. It's relaxed and laidback, yet there are a million things to do on the island. I usually prefer to holiday at places that have gastronomical cuisine, and the food in Phuket is amazing. Lotus Restaurant is one of my two favourite places to eat at whenever I'm in Phuket. The seafood at Lotus is unbelievably fresh and ridiculously cheap. You get to pick your seafood which is swimming in tanks, so the seafood is right out of the water and into the frying pan. The ambience at Lotus is romantic and charming because you get to dine right on the beach amongst a brilliant sunset and twinkling candlelight.
We got the ubiquitous Tom Yum Goong (180THB), hot and sour soup with prawns. The soup came chock-full of ingredients! The prawns were crunchy and sweet, and the soup was appropriately tongue-numbingly spicy.
We also got the Fish Maw Soup with Crab Meat and Shitake Mushrooms. This was thick and full-bodied, with the fish maw adding a spongy yet somewhat crunchy texture to the soup. I loved it.
The next dish to arrive was the Deep Fried Garoupa with Garlic (8.5THB per 100g). The fish was fresh and flaky and was topped off with chunks of garlic which were deep fried till golden and crisp. We picked every single morsel of the aromatic and addictive garlic off. This is probably the only time I'm okay with the BF eating so much garlic.
We also got Minced Pork with Basil. This was savoury, spicy and great with steaming hot white rice. I loved the confluence of flavours, the spiciness of the chili was laced with the sweetness of the basil set against the backdrop of the tender pork.
The next dish was the BBQ Lobster with Garlic (2.9THB per 100g). This was humongous. The BF personally picked this crustacean out, he really really really loves lobsters. The lobster flesh was sweet, fresh and firm, and we used that to wipe off every drop of the luxurious garlic butter sauce.
We also got the Green Curry Chicken. Fragrant pandan intertwined with the unmistakable scent of lemongrass and spicy galangal and chili. This was wonderful with white rice.
With all that feasting, of course we had to get some fibre and greens. Mixed Vegetables with Oyster Sauce. This was simple and classic. Bok choy, cauliflower, baby corn, straw mushrooms, cabbage and carrots sauteed in oyster sauce.
To wash all that down, we got glasses of Pineapple Juice. I love how the Thais decorate every drink with an orchid, it's so pretty and it always conjures up images of blue lagoons and dazzling sunsets.
The bill came up to about S$200, which was jaw-droppingly value-for-money and cheap, considering the size of the garoupa and lobster.
