Starfish Bloo, W Seminyak, Bali

Starfish Bloo is one of two in-house restaurants from which to indulge in the complimentary semi-buffet breakfast at the W Retreat & Spa Bali, Seminyak. The buffet was, by and large, middling, so stick with the ala carte selection. Recommended dishes include the egg white scramble and french toast, and wash it all down with freshly squeezed juices and blended smoothies.

The limited cheese selection, with just 3 cheeses: a hard pecorino, a sharp cheddar and a pungent blue, grapes and a handful of breadsticks and cheese crackers. Skip these.

The charcuterie was just as compact, 1 to suit each meat preference: Beef Salami, Chicken Mushroom Salami and Pork Salami, paired with gherkins, sun-dried tomatoes and capers. Also skip this.

The decidedly restrained salad bar, with the standard cocktail dressing and Italian dressing, and the more unique fusion soy-lime vinegar.

Fresh cut fruits: honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, papaya, and the uncut version that you can bring back to your residence.

The frozen yoghurt station with raspberry, caramel, maple and chocolate syrup for drizzling.

I really liked the fruit juice, smoothie and yoghurt, these tasted really fresh and cleansing. My favourites were the Blueberry and Mango Smoothies, and Watermelon  and Pineapple Juices.

The milk trough, with whole, soy and low fat to satisfy every preference.

Dried fruits -  cranberries, dates, papaya, apples, pineapple, raisins, mangoes, that we packed a bunch to snack on while wandering around.

With granola this pretty, eating clean has never been more enjoyable.

The cereal and oats block, which al-cheapo us also packed a bunch for delayed snacking.

The bread station

An assortment jams to suit your fancy; they even have vegemite!

The baked confectionery were pretty decent. I had to stop the Hubs from stuffing his face! Doughnuts and strawberry berliner

Grape Danish and Almond Croissant

Strawberry Danish and Hazelnut Twist

Chocolate Croissants

Plain Croissant

Chicken Floss Roll - this was fairly commendable, with melted cheese tempered with spicy floss, and Taro Bread

Indonesian desserts - the sticky kuehs are not my thing

My favourite section - gummies and sweets!!!!! Suffice to say, I packed a lot of these back!! :)

The sushi counter with an assortment of nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls - skip these too, they were a bit clunky

A trio of dim sum - steamed pork & shrimp dumpling; steamed pork buns and steamed chicken buns; skip these too, they were clumsy

Miso Soup, Vegetable Curry and Porridge, with all the fixings. The vegetable curry isn't to be missed, it's potent and rich and creamy.

Chinese-style Fried Rice - insipid

Fried Noodles - alright, and set up the curries very well

Chicken Curry - loved the creamy gravy, but the chicken could be more tender

Fish in chilli sauce - reeked of a fishy aftertaste

Roasted Ham - sinewy and chewy, not great

Bacon and Chicken Sausages - didn't quite like the dried out sausages

Hashbrowns, Potato Wedges, Grilled Tomatoes and Quiche Lorraine - unimpressive

Sauteed Mushrooms and Baked Beans - the mushrooms were excellent, juicy and heady with lashings of freshly milled pepper

1 of 2 Egg Stations

where we got our perfectly runny Eggs Sunny-Side

and a fluffy Omelette, packed with corn, peppers and cheese

The other Eggs Station

Where we got the Scrambled Eggs

For health-junkies, the Poached Prawn and Mascarpone Egg White Scramble is recommended.

The best thing at Starfish Bloo turned out to be the Cinnamon Brioche French Toast, this was fluffy, eggy and beautifully caramelised

The Latte veered on the weak side, but it worked as a decent pick-me-up.
