Soon Li Yong Tau Foo

===================

My earlier quest to hunt down dinner-time yong tau fu netted several recommendations for this hawker as well. Renowned for raising their shutters only upon the stroke of midnight, this intrepid stall is purportedly beloved by taxi drivers aplenty. And similar to the general rule (by implication) wherein the stall with the longest queue at any hawker centre must be first-rate, I thought it wise to heed the professed opinions of local taxi drivers, self-appointed proctors of the city's best local fare.

But as with life's generalities, there are exceptions to every rule. And this yong tau foo was just not as superb as its snaking lines or favourable reviews would suggest. It's not to say that the yong tau fu was terrible; it's simply middling and dreadfully underwhelming.

I'd venture an explanation for its popularity: Soon Li is the only yong tau foo stall open in the dead of night, so they're top dog by elimination. I suppose if one was pregnant (or subsists a vampiric lifestyle), and craving yong tau foo in the wee hours, and could not wait till the morning, then yes, Soon Li Yong Tau Foo would be a viable option.

A tip: be sure to order the fried beancurd, fried luncheon meat, and roast pork belly, their meaty, if a smidge contrived, saltiness will help augment the thin, flat, soup.

The large bowl cost about $10 (we've massive appetites) because we loaded it up with extra helpings of spinach and fried ingredients. There are multiple reports of grouchy caustic service, or excessively long waits for food but we didn't experience any of those. Perhaps we visited on a good day and the hawkers woke up on the right side of their beds?? Whatever the reason, I'm thankful. I don't think this review would have been as "restrained" if I had to suffer an ill-mannered grump or queue for pedestrian food. The stall facade below for reference, but really, you can't miss it. It's one of two stalls open in the entire hawker centre (the other being the drink stall next to it).
