Fluff Bakery

Since my last review of Fluff Bakery (which seems like a lifetime ago), the intrepid confectionery has endured as a steadfast constituent in the gentrifying-but-still-charming Kampong Glam enclave. Unwavering in the quality of its bakes, Fluff Bakery has augmented its stable of offerings from exclusively cupcakes to full-on full-sized cakes and doughnuts and cookies. Flavours are still rotated on a weekly basis, with signatures remaining a perennial of course, so you never get tired of their confections.

We love just about everything at Fluff, and I'm especially partial to their doughnuts, which we opine are better than the ones at Dolcetto by Basilico (which used to be my go-to for donuts), so whenever the craving hits, we make a beeline for Arab Street. Also, we take the opportunity to indulge in padang cuisine at Hjh Maimunah (it's right opposite Fluff Bakery) or across the road at House of Minang along Kandahar Street.

So, Sly was craving good ondeh ondeh, the uncle who used to peddle his kuehs at her office has been sorely missed since the implementation of WFH. I'm not crazy about kueh, in spite of my Nonya gran's best efforts, and neither is the half-Baba Husband whose affection for kueh is limited to kueh salat, so I thought a compromise in the form of an ondeh cake from Fluff Bakery would be "perfectly splendid" (😉 when you get it).

The Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($6.80) is an excellent fusion of the traditional and modern. You get the comforting homespun flavours of yesteryear with the refinement of contemporary sponge and buttercream. Sly says this satiated like 80% of her ondeh ondeh craving, an Asian A-, I'll take it!!

The week I picked up the aforementioned ondeh cake, Fluff had an Ondeh Ondeh Cupcake ($4) too, so I added a couple of these to my order. Moniker notwithstanding, this was more reminiscent of putu piring/kueh tutu because of its sugared grated coconut filling.

I bought the Chocolate Nutella Hazelnut Praline Cupcake ($4) for the chocolate lovers in our party, but I ended up hoarding this for myself 😋😅. I don't usually like chocolate (it may come across as shocking to y'all but the caffeine in chocolate gives me a pounding headache) but this was remarkably balanced. Rich and sumptuous but not too sweet or cloying.

Ahh, the piece de resistance, the French Toast Maple Donut ($4) and Chocolate Salted Caramel Donut ($4) are artery-clogging in the most satisfyingly delicious way.

Amongst the classics, the Nutella Red Velvet Cupcake ($4) is a bestseller for good reason. The cream cheese buttercream frosting is divine, and the nutella piping a delightful buttress.

Ditto for the Triple Milo Cupcake ($4), it truly is marvelous what Milo can Do. For. You!!
