The Connoisseur Concerto, Funan Digitalife Mall

I met up with Adee at Funan for an early lunch after I'd concluded a matter at the High Court. The Connoisseur Concerto, or TCC for short, has steadily grown in the coffee bistro/cafe scene with its consistently above average food and full-bodied drip coffee zingers. The portions here are generous, and price range considered fairly value-for-money, so you can count on being satisfactorily stuffed to the gills for as little as $20.

The Tuna Tataki Salad ($14.50) was pretty alright, if it's a little forgettable. The fairly fresh tuna slices were quick seared for a charred finish and dressed in a blended carrot emulsion. Mesclun leaves were topped with deep fried flour strips for a little extra flavour.


The Mushroom Medley Spaghetti ($17.50) laced with plentiful shitake and button mushrooms, and tossed in a portobello sauce had a distinctive Asian edge. This was robust and had a rounded earthy flavour to it. To top it off, it was ginormous! Despite my big-eater rep, I had trouble finishing this.

Queensway Shopping Centre , where locals flock to for all things sports and optical-related, is also known for good laksa. There are 2 laksa stalls, within a stone's throw of each other, both claiming to serve up the best. Both tout to be affiliates of world-famous Katong ones, and the accolades, writeups and publicity plastered all the utilitarian facades will attest to the fierce competition. Seating at both eateries is cramped and constrained, so dining is really a touch-and-go affair. Both are manned by efficient, if a little curt, bevy of staff, and so turnover is high. Good news for the 5-minute-on-average long line of diners waiting their turn. The menu is similarly limited, with laksa being the primary dish of choice, and its fixins' like otah and lime juice as regular side orders. Curry chicken, Chinese-style, is also a popular option. Lao Zhong Zhong Fine Spice Stall, Tai Thong Crescent

So we were waiting to takeaway dinner at Gu Ma Jia 's when the Hubs suddenly recalled that there was "a good kwan chang stall in Tai Thong". As we were peckish, we walked over to the adjacent row of shophouses and lo and behold, there was a small queue at Lao Zhong Zhong , a kwan chang stall in the corner coffeeshop. So we decided to have ourselves a little snack, see how it fared against our Toa Payoh favourite, 93 Wu Xiang Xia Bing . We had a medley of ngoh hiang, fishballs, and spring roll popiahs ($3.50), which were commendable but unfortunately laced with coriander leaves. Which meant 93 Wu Xiang remains our top pick for kwan chang. The raw-garlic chilli dip was excellent though, robust, potent, with just that bit of bite. The stall facade for reference. Asian Corner, Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand

This was our last meal in Bangkok at the airport before flying off back to Singapore. As we didn't have much time before boarding, we stopped by the first casual Thai eatery we saw and promptly made our orders. Their set meals are quite value-for-money, with 2 dishes and a drink, so we got the Set B (450 Baht). The Tom Yum Goong (220 Baht for ala carte) had a humongous freshwater prawn and loads of straw mushrooms. This was spicy but was too saturated with prawn stock. The concentrated broth got cloying after a while. The Pad Ka Pao Kai (180 Baht), chicken sauteed with basil and cashew nuts, was good, with tender chicken chunks flavoured with chilli and peppery basil, but a little tiny in portion.
