Imperial Treasure Nan Bei Restaurant, Ngee Ann City
We made a surprising discovery over the weekend. That you can still find yummy dim sum at 5pm on a weekend! We both were craving dim sum after our workout at the gym, and went to Imperial Treasure Nan Bei Restaurant at Taka on a hunch, hoping that they'd have some leftover dim sum from the lunch crowd. Unexpectedly, they were still churning out piping hot baskets of juicy dim sum morsels! With the exception of some roasted meats that had sold out, they still served up the entire gamut of Cantonese and Shanghainese dim sum.
The Steamed Pork Dumplings ($4.40) were juicy and bouncy, the "siew mai" used fresh minced pork and prawns, and topped off with a little diced mushrooms for texture.
The Steamed Rice Roll with Scallops ($5.50) was very delicate, fresh succulent scallops enveloped in a thin soft rice sheets. I liked that the soy sauce was equally light, so as not to overwhelm the mild sweetness of the scallops.
The lightly battered Deep Fried Silver Fish ($7.30) was snacking at its simplest, crunchy and tasty, using only a little salt and pepper for seasoning.
The Beancurd Thick Soup with Seafood ($7) was thick, chunky and comforting, with plentiful fresh seafood, prawns, scallops, sweet melons and silky smooth beancurd.
The clear broth-based Crab Meat with Conpoy and Melon Soup ($7) was rich in flavour and depth, with woodsy white button mushrooms, diced winter melons, shredded crab meat and dried scallops.
