Barrio by Mex Out, Somerset

Barrio by Mex Out has been on my to-eat list ever since I had the salads at its sister concept, the semi-takeout joint Mex Out. Whereas the latter was salad-centric, the former offers the whole gamut of Tex-Mex cuisine in a larger-spaced restaurant-bar.

The Hubs loves their signature torta, which he orders on the regular through deliveroo, so one night after class, we popped by 313 Somerset to dine-in proper.

A caveat: I'm no expert on Mexican/Latin American or even Tex-Mex cuisine, so while the food at Barrio was pretty good, I can't speak to its authenticity.

A must-try, the Signature Torta ($16) burger comprises a massive hunk of a crisp-fried chicken patty, schmeared with chipotle mayo and creamy guacamole, and jazzed up with pico de gallo and pickled red cabbage. This was scrumptious.

The Devil's Prawns ($26) appeared deceptively stodgy but it was delicious. The prawns were blanketed in a sumptuous medley of chipotle sauce, sour cream and melty cheese, served alongside roasted vegetables, Mexican rice dotted with corn nibblets, and a grilled corn-on-the-cob.

The Corn Tortillas were excellent, one a Braised Shredded Beef Taco ($6) slathered with smoked red salsa, and the other a Pulled Pork Carnitas Taco ($6) burnished with green salsa, were brightened with lashings of diced red onions and a touch of fresh lime.

A staple order at any Latin American restaurant, the Corn Esquites ($9) were so-so. The corn was sweet and juicy, and I liked the added zing of the spicy paprika, but there was too much chipotle mayo which overwhelmed the delicate sweetness of the corn.

What I really love about Mexican salads is how awash with colours they are. Like the Protein Salad ($15) which was really #eatingtherainbow. Here, a base of romaine lettuce is topped with grilled corn nibblets, black beans, pico de gallo, guac, cotija cheese, and roasted chicken dice. Hearty, flavoursome, and absolutely yummy.
