Skycity Darwin
As Darwin isn't the most touristy city in Australia, there's a dearth of luxury options for accommodation. Skycity Darwin, at a little over 4* (but not quite as 5* as it claims), is as high-end as it gets in Darwin.
While it may not be in the heart of town, the hotel is next to Mindil Beach, offering much more scenic views and a breezy, relaxed vibe.
Annexed to the only casino in Darwin, Skycity, the multi-concept complex is lively and bustling. I supposed that's a good thing, especially for city folks accustomed to the nightlife.
One of 2 pools in the hotel, this was the free-form pool where the main hotel rooms were at.
There's a small gym next to the main hotel pool. We didn't use it much, it was stuffy and depressingly cloistered, but we rented bicycles to cycle around the complex.
And we ran along the beach instead. This track went on for miles!
Then there's a lagoon pool where the lagoon rooms were. It's a lot more private, as the main hotel's bars and restaurants don't get access to this space.
We stayed in a Superior Lagoon King Room, which was the biggest option at 50 sqm (rates starts at A$620 per night).
The bathroom has a lookout window to the bedroom from the tub, separate shower, and closed-off toilet.
While the room wasn't our usual standard of luxury, the room service was surprisingly decent. The Caesar Salad (A$18.50), loaded with cos lettuce, shaved parmesan, anchovies, bacon crisps, croutons, poached egg, and a supplement of poached chicken breast (A$4) was hearty and delicious. We asked for dressing on the side, coz I'm not really a fan of cream-based salad dressings.
The Chicken Satay (A$16) was well-marinated and robust in flavour, imbued with the heady char of the grill, and served with a fruity dip for piquancy and rice.
The Club Sandwich (A$22) layered fried egg, bacon strips, broiled chicken and lettuce with toasty wholegrain bread. Sided by thick fries and mesclun on the side, this was simple stuff done well.
Ditto for the Fish & Chips (A$). Classic fare done commendably well.
