Pastamania, Funan Digitalife Mall

I've mentioned before that the food at Pastamania caters to the teenage crowd because of its competitively low prices. However, I've since discovered that it is also geared towards the "halal dollar". There aren't many Italian eateries that are certified halal in Singapore. In fact, apart from Pastamania, I cannot think of any other local Italian joint that is certified halal. So, where do the Muslims gravitate when they are craving some Italian? Pastamania, of course!

I've to confess, though, that I know this because of lunch with Jal, as he's Muslim and naturally, has such a halal dietary requirement when we meet up for our monthly lunches.

The Chicken Ham & Mushroom Calzone ($9.20 for 7") is a one-person portioned crusty pizza bread, paired with a tomato-spaghetti sauce on the side.

The folded pizza is stuffed with sliced champignons, turkey ham and cheese, very no fuss, very simple. The pizza dough is thick, crusty and well-toasted, not particularly easy to chew through, compared to a thin crust wood-fired pizza. But then again, this costs less than $10, a fraction of the price of a wood-fired pizza.

The Waffle Potato ($3.90) served with a coriander chili sauce, is really no different from those frozen versions that one could easily throw into a deep fryer at home and dish up. But, deep fried food is really quite standard everywhere. This was still nice, a guilty indulgence, no doubt, but nice nonetheless.
