Yong Kee Famous Fishball Noodle, ABC Brickworks Food Centre

ABC Brickworks Food Centre is one of another famous hawker centres with many notable hawker legends. We were in the Alexandra area, and seeing that it was just before the peak lunch hour of noon, popped in for a spot of lunch. After being deterred by the ridiculously snaking queue at that famous roasted meats stall, the Hubs' eagle eye spied this noodle stall, its facade plastered full of TV and celebrity endorsements and news writeups. As with all heavily-endorsed hawker stalls, I was initially wary. Most of them are overhyped and under-deliver on the goods. But, I'd been craving fishball noodles all week, and wanted to give this a try.

The Mushroom Minced Meat Mee Pok ($3) was excellent. The Hubs' executive decision to request additional mushrooms (+$1) was a damn fine one; the mushrooms had been thoroughly braised to an aromatic wholesome slippery goodness. The pork was fresh, noodles appropriately toothsome, but what made it all come together beautifully was that heavily vinegar-ed chilli sauce. The bright vinegar came through every mouthful.

The seemingly innocuous bowl of Fishball Kway Teow ($3) was robust and bright, with the liberal dose of black vinegar and chilli sambal. The fishballs and fishcakes were fairly decent but the MVP has gotta go to the fish dumplings. Fresh and chewy and delicious.

The shop facade for reference.

I used to frequent ABC so often for my mee goreng fix - there was a shop opposite the satay shop that excelled in mutton steak, nasi goreng and mee goreng, all Indian Muslim style. But they got caught for faking the mutton when they actually used beef! Sigh. So they closed down and disappeared forever...
