Ponggol Nasi Lemak, Tanjong Katong Road

Ponggol Nasi Lemak is one of the more recognised purveyors of Chinese-style nasi lemak, and while it's spawned a few outlets around the island, the mothership along Tanjong Katong Road remains the most popular.

The rice ($1) wasn't the most fragrant, nor noticeably redolent of coconut milk, but the variety of ingredients make up for the less-than-flavourful rice. Also, the chilli paste was absolutely smashing. It was potent and punchy and heady, a robust balance of the sweet and spicy, with smoky notes. The rice may be plain, but it was elevated by the fantastic chilli.

We had failsafes like the otah ($1.50), luncheon meat ($0.80 each), and ikan bilis ($1). The Egg ($0.80) was a half-and-half, the whites were rubbery but the yolks were still gooey. Then there were the deluxe items like the fried lady's fingers ($1) and breadcrumbed prawn ($1.30), which were quite delightful.

Additional premium items like the fried chicken wing ($1.70) was commendable, and the curry vegetables ($2.20) was great when paired with the rice ($1).
