Lucha Loco

We've been having a spate of really abysmal meals, so we were really thankful to finally catch a break, with a fantastic dinner at Lucha Loco.

Sister restaurant to the fabulous Super Loco, the Duxton Hill tenant was boisterous, convivial, and breezy. The menu, a hodgepodge of typical Mexican street foods of tacos, tostaditas and quesadillas, was unfussy, punchy, and brimming with heart and soul. Service was spontaneous and chipper. Notwithstanding the predominantly expat crowd, I loved it. The only problem, the weaksauce air-conditioning, which, in the current sweltering humidity, resulted in us perspiring through our work shirts halfway through our dinner.

A must-try, the Tostaditas de Res ($16) was a quartet of bite-sized crisp miniature tacos stacked high with juicy cubes of grilled Australian sirloin. A little chipotle mayo lent heat while leek and fresh radish circlets balanced the spice.

Also amazing was the Tostaditas de Cangrejo ($16), which were laden with a scoop of blue swimmer crab mayo, chilled for a refreshing twist. The sweetness of the crabmeat was contrasted against the spice of the habanero mayo and creamy avocado. This was so good I didn't even care that it was laced with spring onions.

The last of the "entradas", or appetizers, was the ubiquitous Elotes ($8) a traditional street food snack of grilled corn on the cob glazed with chipotle mayo, cotija cheese and a liberal dusting of chilli-paprika powder.

The tacos were some kind of delicious as well, and Lucha Loco's got a myriad of them. Our favourites were the Chorizo con Res ($10) sumptuous with spicy chorizo and pulled shreds of braised beef brisket, spiked with chipotle salsa and given a lift with a crisp cabbage salad

The Baja Fish ($10), layered with a slab of fish battered and fried, fresh mint, shredded cabbage, a zesty chilli mango salsa, and creamy chipotle mayo.

An excellent side, the Coliflor Tostado y Brocoli ($9) slathered a rich garlic queso soubise and sprinkled pine nuts over roasted cauliflower, broccoli, and baby corn.
