Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant

Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant at Takashimaya, together with Crystal Jade Golden Palace across the road at Paragon, are my favourite restaurants under the Crystal Jade Group. Though on the higher end, the fare at these fine-dining restaurants is consistently good, and service top-notch. It's been a while since I was last here, but we were at the Taka department store trying to buy the singing Olaf and decided to pop by for dinner.

The restaurant was bustling with diners, so it was surprising that we got seated immediately. I suppose the restaurant generally caters to large groups so the smaller tables tend to be freed up for couples like us. Dishes also arrived in quick succession, for which, my rumbling tummy was grateful.

The Braised Chicken in Shrimp Paste in Casserole ($20) with earthy shitake and white button mushrooms was succulent, coated in a robust and spicy sauce.

The Fried Hor Fan with Prawns ($28) was, in contrast, mellow and silky, draped in a lusciously eggy gravy.

The Double Boiled Cabbage Soup ($15) with bamboo pith and mushroom was rich in depth and sweet. A most comforting soup indeed.

A favourite of mine, the Diced Winter Melon Soup ($10) was chunked up with conpoy, bamboo pith, mushrooms and crabmeat.

The complimentary appetizer of chilled beancurd, glazed in a lightly spiced, stickily sweet marinade, was refreshing.
