@pq: my charge-out rates are $800 per hour, plus petrol and all related expenses for my car, and 20% of the food bill as my commission. Okayyyy i give u friend discount....10%

I've mentioned before that the best croissants are to be found at Antoinette . So I was curious when Maison Kayser , an artisanal bakery, opened to rave reviews. Apparently, their breads were awesome, and their croissants were touted to be the best around.  Well, I had tea with a girlfriend there recently and took the opportunity to get a couple of their baked goods. My verdict is to stick to their breads, which you can takeaway from the bakery, and avoid their mains. While their breads are indeed awesome, their other stuff were relatively sub-par. We started off on a high note with the Croissant ($2.43), an aromatic, fresh out of the oven confection. Its crisp flaky exterior peeled away to reveal soft chewy and airy insides. It was totally addictive. Bakery on O'Connell, Adelaide

Our #1 Australia-holiday tradition is hunting for and eating meat pies. It's our favourite Australian comfort food, and we can never get worthy alternatives back home in SG.Really, no visit Down Under is complete without "stuffing our pie-holes with pie". So, we were in Adelaide city, and heard of the award-winning, very literally named, Bakery on O'Connell . Their pies at priced at A$5 each, and we bought a bunch of them for tea. I didn't think it was possible to have a bad pie in Oz, but by golly, these were the worst pies we've ever had. The pastry was lacking in that buttery flaky texture, and the fillings were insipid; what an utter wash out. The bakery may have been great, but that was once upon a time, and that time has long passed. Suffice it to say, we didn't finish the pies. Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice, United Square

Fans of chicken rice will know that the famed Wee Nam Kee had to vacate their Novena Ville premises last year. After a hiatus of about a month, they've re-opened and set up shop a few blocks down at United Square . The new shop space is still as threadbare but definitely spiffier, with less grease and wear as its previous Novena stronghold. Also, the humble chicken rice shop has expanded to 4 outlets in total here, including one at in the east (katong), and 2 in the marina bay area (esplanade and marina square). I was worried, because you know how it is: whenever a restaurant undergoes expansion and/or renovation works, the quality of their food goes down and prices go up. Exponentially. Thankfully, my worry was unfounded. The food seems pretty much the same, and while the prices at United Square have indeed risen slightly, I would still consider the price points very competitively affordable.
