Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao, Holland Village

Image
We went to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao at Holland Village for dinner after hitting the gym. It was a little late so there was not many dinner options at Holland Village. The Sauteed Egg White with Fish Meat and Conpoy ($11.80), a delicately flavoured dish that was wonderfully light and fluffy. I loved this, but the BF, who prefers stronger flavours, thought this was a little plain for his liking. The BF also got the Double-Boiled Chicken with Noodle ($8). The handmade noodles were fresh, soft and slightly bouncy, set in a chicken and pork based soup stock. The soup was sweet and thick, but still delicate and light. I got the Double-Boiled Chicken Soup ($7.50), very light and clear. Paradise Inn, Funan DigitaLife Mall

Image
Mr J and I went to Paradise Inn for a celebratory lunch after a hearing. The Paradise Inn chain is a casual dining concept by the Paradise Group, serving more home-style cze char dishes than its seafood pioneer at Defu Lane . Stuff your grandmother would cook for family gatherings. This is like the Paradise Group version of Crystal Jade Kitchen of the Crystal Jade Group of restaurants. As we were in court, we both didn't bring our cameras, so the pictures below were taken by my iPhone.  We got the Steamed Minced Pork with Chestnut and Salted Egg Yolk ($8), coarsely chopped mince with discernible cubes of chestnut for added texture and crunch. Mr J doesn't eat salted egg yolk, which meant I got the entire golden disc to myself, yay! The Stewed Tofu with Chicken and Salted Fish in Claypot ($10 for small) was just so-so, Crystal Jade does this Cantonese classic better. This just lacked the rich, salty, flavoursome oomph of the salted fish and oyster gravy combination. ...

Fatty Weng Restaurant

Image
I get some of the best, cheapest and most underrated food recommendations from Beeps. She's a girl after my own heart, loves her food and finds joy in the simplest things in life. She's also probably the only modern female left on the planet that's never heard of Burberry, Chanel, Christian Dior, Hermes...you get the idea. Today, after work, we went for a simple cze char dinner at Fatty Weng Restaurant , another of her recommendations. We've driven by this place dozens of times but never thought to check it out. Apparently, Fatty Weng's been around since the 70's and has a slightly upmarket branch in Chinatown (Da Dong). The Roast Pork with Mushroom and Beancurd ($12 for small) was decadent pleasure. The Chinese black mushroom were plump and succulent, and I loved the flavourful roasted pork. The beancurd was a little waterlogged though. The Sauteed Spinach ($6 for small) was simplicity at its best. Light, non-oily, non-salty, crunchy, with the natura...

Crystal Jade Kitchen, Holland Village

Image
We popped into Crystal Jade Kitchen at Holland Village for dinner. It'd just reopened, after having undergone minor renovations. The restaurant now boasts fresh new grey tiles and wallpaper, but it's nice that it's still got an unpretentious and family-friendly atmosphere. Please note that the Supper Set Menu Promotion and the Guang Zhou Style Stewed Dishes Promotion are no longer available here, but the Guang Zhou Style Stewed Dishes are still available on the menu. We ordered one of our favourite dishes, the Sauteed Beef with Mushrooms ($17.80), tender and juicy beef slices with white button mushrooms in a rich oyster sauce gravy. I got the Double-Boiled Chicken Soup with White Fungus and Red Dates ($8.80), a herbal and delicate chicken stock concoction enriched with the natural sweetness of red dates. White Fungus added some crunch and texture to the clear soup. We also got the Stewed Spring Chicken with Special Made Sauce ($14.80), part of the Guang Zhou ...

Sushi Tei, Paragon

Image
Sushi Tei 's relocated from the old wing at Paragon to the newer wing, where Fitness First used to be. It's now a much larger space, with dark woods and cozy booth seats, resulting in a very modern but luxurious feel. We had a late lunch/early dinner there over the weekend. Sushi Tei is infamous for not accepting any reservations, so most people end up waiting in line during the meal peak periods. But the beauty of not having kids is that we don't exactly have a routine to follow. That means we have the freedom to watch movies till late, sleeping only at the wee hours of the morning, waking up at noon, having our first meal of the day at 3pm, which is right smack in the middle of other people's mealtimes. That was why the restaurant was relatively empty when we arrived at 3pm in the afternoon for lunch. We got the Ebi Tempura ($10), sweet and crunchy prawns encased in a very light but crisp batter. The BF got the beancurd version of the Ebi Tempura, the Agedas...

Subway Niche, Paragon

Image
I remember when I was little, I loved eating the "rainbow kueh", also known as lagis sagu. I'd peel off each multi-coloured layer by multi-coloured layer to eat. Over the years, I'd forgotten about this nonya kueh. But ever since a client sent us a box of nonya kuehs, I'd become reacquainted with my childhood love. I've found the best lapis sagu at Subway Niche . Their Lapis Sagu ($0.80 each) is slightly chewy and has the most brilliant rainbow colours. Each delicate layer is thin enough, so it's real fun to peel off each rainbow layer. Subway Niche 290 Orchard Road Paragon #B1-K3 Tel: 6737 7366

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Restaurant, Chijmes

Image
We were both craving red meat after hitting the gym so we went to Gyu-Kaku at Chijmes for some Japanese BBQ. Although it was a Saturday night, we were able to get booth seats immediately. That said, it was past the peak dinner period because it was already 9.30pm by the time we arrived at the restaurant. Also, the restaurant doesn't have a dress code, which meant that we were able to dine in our sweaty tees and shorts. Besides, we do come out smelling like the food we'd ingested so it was just as well that we weren't smelling our freshest. We ordered the Karubi ($18.90 for large), beef short rib marinated in Tare , a Japanese concocted marinade with soy for flavour, fruit juice for acidity and roasted garlic for aroma. The short rib was so marbled that we didn't need to order the wagyu version. We also got Buta Karubi ($14.90 for large), decadent strips of pork belly marinated in Spicy Miso , which lent a smoky sweetness to the fatty pork. The Chicken ($10.90 f...
