Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood Restaurant

I've found the best Butter Crabs in Singapore. Butter crabs are usually the rich creamy type (similar to the shimmering sands crabs at Uncle Leong's), or the dry fried type. I personally prefer the dry type, which taste a bit like butter or cereal prawns. However, unlike butter or cereal prawns with lots of savoury buttery crispy bits sprinkled all over the dish, the only butter crabs available in Singapore didn't have the crispy butter bits that I so love. (The only butter crabs with crispy bits is only available across the causeway at Danga Bay)

Then I had supper one night at Ban Leong Wah Hoe, further north along Upper Thomson Road from Pop's place, and I fell in love with their Butter Crabs ($34 per kg). The sweet buttery notes of the floury crispy bits perfectly complemented the delicate sweetness of the crabmeat.

Since then, I've been buying it almost every night to slowly savour it in front of the telly (yup, that's one of my ultimate indulgences, sitting cross-legged in front of the telly eating crabs).

We also ordered their Stir-Fried Spinach ($6), lightly fried with soy and garlic. Simple, home-spun fare.

The Claypot Beancurd ($8) was choc-a-bloc with ingredients, baby-bottom-soft beancurd, decadent pork belly, snow peas, onions, baby corn and cauliflower.

The Seafood Crispy Noodles ($4) was a letdown. The noodles were crisp and the gravy luscious, but some of the seafood wasn't fresh. The fish was rubbery and pungent, and the prawns were too alkaline, robbing them of their natural sweetness. At least the tender squid wasn't rubbery.
