Fatty Weng Restaurant

I get some of the best, cheapest and most underrated food recommendations from Beeps. She's a girl after my own heart, loves her food and finds joy in the simplest things in life. She's also probably the only modern female left on the planet that's never heard of Burberry, Chanel, Christian Dior, Hermes...you get the idea.

Today, after work, we went for a simple cze char dinner at Fatty Weng Restaurant, another of her recommendations. We've driven by this place dozens of times but never thought to check it out. Apparently, Fatty Weng's been around since the 70's and has a slightly upmarket branch in Chinatown (Da Dong).

The Roast Pork with Mushroom and Beancurd ($12 for small) was decadent pleasure. The Chinese black mushroom were plump and succulent, and I loved the flavourful roasted pork. The beancurd was a little waterlogged though.

The Sauteed Spinach ($6 for small) was simplicity at its best. Light, non-oily, non-salty, crunchy, with the natural sweetness and juices of the green vegetables brilliantly preserved in the cooking process. Oh, fried lard lovers will dig this, golden cubes of fried lard are added at the side.

I liked the Char Siew Omelette ($10 for large), fluffy, and flavoursome, but a teensy weensy oily and salty. This would be great with plain white rice.

The San Lao Hor Fan ($16 for large) was not bad, but I didn't like that they didn't relieve the beansprouts off their heads and tails. Fish slices were generous and fresh, and gravy was delicate but delicious.

Da Dong is under Fatty Weng?! Now that's something I would never have associated.. but Da Dong does have good food.

I like visiting your page - such great suggestions on food :) The Zen Dining write up that I had commented on previously really was worth it, so much so that I'm bringing my colleagues there next month.
