Seafood Paradise, Singapore Flyer

I've mentioned before that Seafood Paradise at Defu had an atrocious waiting time, lacklustre seafood BUT admittedly good cze char fare. So when the BF and I visited the restaurant's Singapore Flyer branch on a weekday night, we stuck to their cze char offerings and gave their seafood dishes a miss.

We ordered their Stewed Ee-fu Noodle with Crabmeat ($12 for small), which was as yummy as ever. This is easily one of the best versions of this braised noodle dish around. I love the generousity of the shredded crabmeat and scrambled egg white oyster sauce-based gravy, plentiful straw mushrooms and oodles of softly braised egg noodles.

We also got the Sauteed Scallops with chef's XO Sauce ($20 for small). The BF recently learnt about the existence of XO sauce, from the claypot mushroom dish at Crystal Jade Kitchen at Holland Village, so he was keen to try this dish. This was aromatic, spicy and bold. I loved how succulent and sweet the scallops were.

The Homemade Beancurd with Seafood in Mini Wok ($10 for small) was also yummylicious. The essence of prawns and sea cucumber infused the oyster sauce based gravy with their umami flavours of the sea. But the beancurd was the star of the dish, it was silky, soft and incredibly smooth. Like a baby's bottom.

At the recommendation of the manager, we ordered the Seafood Tom Yam Soup ($8 per portion). This was clear, instead of the typical red-hued types. But it was no less lethal, my nose got runny after 2 spoonfuls of this deceptively spicy soup. The seafood was also pleasantly fresh, squid was bouncy and soft, and prawns were crunchy.

The only less-than-stellar dish was the Sauteed Diced Chicken with Dried Chilli and Cashew ($10 for small), which turned out a wee bit too sweet for our liking. We would have preferred a little more kick and heat to this dish.

The obligatory Appetizers ($1.50) was also quite an unusual treat. The flour-based crackers were sweetish, and it complemented the spicy and piquant pounded chili sauce in the background.

I've heard the Defu branch has recently gone through an intensive refurbishment and has added some new dishes to their menu. Am considering making a reservation for dinner this weekend coz there's usually lots of bookings. Let's see how it goes.

Dear Anon,

I really wouldn't recommend you going all the way to Defu Lane. The standard of the seafood dishes just doesn't justify the distance and waiting time, even if you've made a reservation. If you must, stick to the non-seafood dishes and bring your iPhone along to keep you occupied. Good luck!
ATTENTION

Service are pitiful

We paid 600$ for three persons to eat crabs, the food is good but services and managed very bad.

We haven't finish main course when server came with desert.

After, the manager added price for paper towel in the invoice .

This restaurant wants to believe they are a luxury when they are incapabable to have a corresponding service, even a diner provided better service.

Whoa, $600 for 3 persons?!? That's quite ridiculous. What did you eat? Snow crabs?

Actually, such seafood places don't time their dishes to arrive at your table after each other. They just plonk them on your table as soon as the kitchen finishes cooking them. Seafood restaurants in Singapore are simply upscale cze char places with more comfort, not a full-service fine-dining restaurant. I don't think the majority of Singaporeans would consider Seafood Paradise to be a luxurious fine-dining type of restaurant where they expect dishes to be perfectly timed to arrive at their tables only after each course is finished.

And it's not unreasonable to transfer the cost of paper towelettes onto the customer, lots of restaurants do that, so unless the towelettes cost like a $1 each, it's generally not considered bad service to charge for such towelettes.

Did you think that the service was bad because of the attitude or something else instead?
