Prego

Prego is one of our favourite Italian restaurants. It's relaxed, boisterous and unpretentious. Admittedly, a huge attraction is that it's the nearest Italian restaurant to my home.

We were really famished today so we ordered more than our usual. Which meant getting a larger table, which usually sits four, because we needed the extra table space. We got a table nearer the front of the restaurant, which was much quieter than the rest of the restaurant. I much preferred this added privacy, we couldn't hear the conversations of other diners.

While waiting for the food to arrive (which didn't take very long anyway), we were served a complimentary bread basket. Prego's bread is consistently fresh, fluffy and warm. I've never encountered a hardened and/or cold bread here. The bread is served with a piquant cold tomato salsa dip, which sets Prego apart from the standard butter cubes and/or olive oil-balsamic vinegar infusions. I like to flavour my olive oil infusion with a little sprinkling of salt and pepper for that extra oomph.

We got our fave, the Minestrone di Verdure e Legumi ($15), a Tuscan-style tomato-based soup with assorted vegetables and beans. This was comforting, hearty and sweet. Such a tummy warmer!

For mains, we got the Risotto al Funghi Porcini e Bottoncini con Spinaci ($33), a traditional Italian rice dish with sauteed porcini and button mushrooms and spinach. This was lusciously creamy and incredibly delicate. I loved the addition of spinach, which lifted the natural heaviness of the starchy risotto. Prego's risottos are well known to be one of the better ones in town.

The BF got the Maccheroncelli all Amatriciana ($24), short tube pasta tossed with pancetta, onion, chili and tomato salsa. The pasta is made fresh in Prego's kitchens daily, which explains the evident freshness of the perfectly al dente pasta. I'm not a fan of tube pasta, but this was very yummy. Especially the sauce and pancetta. The BF happily lapped this up.

We also got a side dish of Spinaci Saltati ($12), sauteed spinach with garlic and parmigiano cheese.
I once read about a study done by an American professor that the reason why the Chinese are less prone to being fat is because they commonly eat vegetables as one of their main dishes, whereas the typical American diet consists of vegetables only as a side dish. Rarely do vegetables feature as a main dish the way it does in most Chinese meals. See, it does pay to eat more veggies!

That wasn't all, we also got a pizza (well, I did say that we were famished). The Porcini e Gamberi ($27), wood-fired thin-crust pizza topped with porcini mushrooms and prawns. I loved how light and crispy the pizza was. This is one pizza that you'll be guaranteed to finish the crust.

Please note that American Express card holders are entitled to a 50% (for 2 persons) off the bill. It's 33% off for 3 diners, 25% off for 4 diners and so on. You can find out more about it here.
