Chili's Grill & Bar, Tanglin Mall

We finished at the gym late today, so there was a limited choice of a dinner location that was still open past 9.30pm. Chili's is one of those late-night dinner spots, and we figured that the dinner crowd would have left by then so we wouldn't have to queue (Chili's doesn't take reservations, and why would they need to, it's a full-house every night!). As it turned out, we were only half right. The restaurant was (almost) full capacity when we popped in for dinner, but we got a booth seat immediately.

We started off with a Soup of the Day, the Southwestern Chicken Tortilla Soup ($7.90 for a bowl with an entree), a Southern-style tomato-based soup with chunks of chicken breast, black beans, tomatoes, corn, red and green peppers, strips of carrots and tortilla, topped with melted cheddar cheese. It was like a decadent chunky soupy salsa, authentic and true to its Southern/Mexican roots and brought back memories of a fantastic dinner in the States during winter.

We shared an entree, the Rib & Chicken Combo ($25.90), half-rack of baby-back ribs and Monterey chicken, served with corn on the cob and cinnamon apples. We switched the cinnamon apples with mashed potatoes with black pepper gravy.

The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and robustly flavoured. The Monterey chicken, marinated grilled chicken breast with bbq sauce, applewood smoked bacon, melted cheese was rich and moist, and topped with diced fresh tomatoes for a tangy twist. The corn on the cob was possibly one of the best grilled sweet corn around, it was incredibly sweet and luxuriously buttery.

We got a few sides to share as well. The Mashed Potatoes with Black Pepper Gravy ($3.90) is the best version of mashed potatoes, hands down. It was silkily creamy, lightly spiced and whipped with scrubbed potato skins for texture and extra vitamins. I prefer this to Chili's other mashed potato loaded with all the toppings.

We also got the Sauteed Mushrooms Onions and Capsicums ($3.90), which is really a tried and tested fail-safe option. The wilted onions were sweet and the capsicum added crunch, spiced heat and texture.

For fibre, we got the Seasonal Veggies ($3.90), lightly steamed and salted broccoli florets and grated carrots, this was nuanced, refreshing and healthy.

Please note that the portions at Chili's are gargantuan (although we noticed that the Monterey Chicken had shrunk a little), so a typical dinner for even big eaters like the BF and I consisted of only a shared entree, 3 sides and a soup.
