A dinner-time hankering for yong tau fu led to the discovery of Fatty Aunt Yong Tau Fu.
Most (well, the reputable ones anyway) yong tau foo stalls tend to sell out by late lunch (including old-reliables Cuppage Yong Tau Foo and Yi Xiang Feng at Ang Mo Kio), so I leaned on word-of-mouth for recommendations because googling netted results that all shuttered by mid-afternoon.
How I've never known about this seasoned long-timer till recently, I have no idea!! Purportedly crazy popular with the hospital staff at SGH come lunch-time (it's a short hop and skip away from SGH's College Road entrance), this Silat Road veteran has been around for yonks. Another big plus: its Jalan Bukit Merah/Kampong Bahru locale is so very accessible as it's not too far from the city.
Fatty Aunt's noteworthy for its boggling array of fried stuffed ingredients (they may look indistinguishable from the other but they're all excellent), as well as its specialty bak chor mee-esque pairing of its dry-style noodles.
My favourite Minced Pork Mee Pok ($8) is a cross between bah chor mee and Ampang-style yong tau foo, topped with fried dumplings and stuffings a-plenty.
For a more traditional Ampang Yong Tau Fu flavour, the Bean Sauce ($6.20) is a better bet. This is a skosh on the sweet side, with copious lashings of sweet sauce.
For purists, get the clear Yong Tau Foo Soup ($5), delicate and redolent with simmered yellow beans.
