Song Fa Bak Kut Teh, Centrepoint

Aging Orchard mall Centrepoint recently underwent a complete overhaul. While they lost a number of anchor tenants, they've netted a slew of dining concepts. Amongst them is notable bak kut teh brand Song Fa, which new outlet in town is the first and only pork rib soup-centric restaurant in the Orchard area.

While Song Fa isn't our favourite, or even in the top 3, bak kut teh vendor, its Centrepoint outlet is conveniently and centrally located, and which upscale setting is comfortable.

The Premium Loin Ribs Soup ($11.50), the most superior of the rib options, passed muster but it could be a smidge more fall-off-the-bone tender. The soup, while rich in depth and buttery garlicky notes, was a little lacking in white pepper elements. The refill broth, though, was markedly more peppery.

The Braised Beancurd Skin ($3.50) was excellent in texture, soft and chewy, but was veering on the insipid. A richer braise would have made this quite a hit.

The Braised Peanuts ($1.50) was fantastic. Lovely nutty notes and addictively soft.

We loved the Dough Fritters ($2.20), freshly fried so it was crispy; that alone set it apart from most places which just re-fry their fritters. These cruellers soaked up the soup beautifully.

Song Fa has expanded their menu to offer a few side dishes, and the Spicy Pork Belly ($8), while robust in flavour and redolent in oyster sauce, garlic and dried chilli accents, was a little less than meltingly luscious.

The Homemade Prawn Roll ($8.50) was pretty decent, juicy, flavourful and scrumptious.
