Lor Mee, Bukit Purmei Road

Beeps had told me about this place eons ago, but I only recently made the trip down south to a coffeeshop hidden away in the sleepy suburban township of Bukit Purmei. Widely touted as one of the best lor mee in Singapore, I arrived one afternoon to find a 10-min-long queue of customers. In additon to their classic lor mee ($3) loaded with half an egg, fishcake, braised pork belly, fish nuggets, wantons and ngoh hiang, they have a premium selection for those who love their fish nuggets (+$2), wantons (+$1) or ngoh hiang (+$1). Or the glutton option with extras of everything. I like fish nuggets and opted for the Crispy Fried Fish Lor Mee ($5), a bowl towering with the crunchy morsels. The gravy was sumptuous and robust, punctuated with copious lashings of black vinegar, homemade chilli sambal and pepper. Hansang Korean Family Restaurant, Novena Square 2

The third floor of Novena Square 2 has been dubbed "Little Korea" due to the prevalence of Korean-centric shops. There's a Korean supermarket, at least 2 Korean restaurants and a whole bunch of hole-in-the-wall fashion shops selling clothes imported from Korea. We were there one evening and were enticed by the delicious smells wafting from Hansang Korean Family Restaurant . One part of the restaurant is reserved for those having Korean BBQ and the other part is solely for diners not having the Korean BBQ. This separateness is great because you don't walk out smelling of bulgogi. A unique dining feature here is that they actually serve an  Amuse Bouche of sorts. The trio of bite-sized bits heralded the start of a good meal. The People vs Cheapo Food Bloggers and Bad English

This is a mini rant. Friends know that my one guilty indulgence is reading food blogs ("flogs"). ("guilty" because I read them at work...yes, my boss reads this flog too) And Singapore, despite its little size, has a very developed food blogging scene. A quick surf on the internet will prove that there is an inordinate number of flogs for a country as tiny as ours. I suppose it's really due to the connectivity of our island, its technologically savvy netizens and their insatiable appetite and love for food. But lately, I've noticed a worrying trend. There is a growing number of flogs that I've stopped reading entirely, simply because almost 90% of their posts are all based on invited tastings. Don't these cheapos ever pay for their meals anymore?!?
