Tonkichi, Suntec City Mall

If you are hankering for some Japanese-style breaded deep fried food, Tonkichi is the one name that pops out. This Japanese restaurant specialises in tonkatsu, i.e. breaded deep fried pork, which explains the similarity to the restaurant name. In fact, almost everything on the menu is limited to meat or seafood which are breaded and deep fried to a golden crisp. The menu is admittedly a little boring, but they arguably serve the best tonkatsu around.

The Chicken Katsu Toji Set ($26.90) served with rice (unlimited) and miso soup, made for a fairly substantial meal.

The chicken breast is coated with scrambled egg and fine breadcrumbs, then deep fried to a gorgeous golden hue and simmered in scrambled egg, onions and soy in a claypot that keeps the food warm throughout the entire meal.

Fresh julienned cabbage, refillable, provide a nice fresh crunch to the otherwise heavy meal.

Japanese Pickles lent a nice piquant element to the savoury chicken.

The Rosu Katsu Curry ($24.90) using the loin portion of pork, had a mildly chewy texture due to its fat content, was just as good as the chicken koji.

The curry gravy is served separately to keep the pork cutlet crisp.

I've always liked the uniquely sweet Japanese curry, choc-a-bloc with carrots, potatoes and onions for sweetness, chunk and texture.

The pork was tender, juicy and moist. I liked that fresh, not frozen pork was used.

Obligatory Salad greens to counter the calorie-rich thick curry gravy and deep fried pork.

Miso soup, fairly generic and otherwise unremarkable, is provided as a side dish.

Extra sea kelp and tofu are added to the soup for variety and texture.
