Paulaner Brauhaus

CC, Beeps and I drove out for lunch to have some German food at Paulaner Brauhaus, one of the more well known German restaurants in Singapore.

We ordered classic Germain mainstays to share communally. The portions are huge so there was no way we could have finished them on our own anyways.

The first dish on the menu that caught CC's eye was the Crispy Pork Knuckle ($29.50) with Sauerkraut and Bread Dumpling. I generally try not to eat the feet of animals, but this was not bad. Even I, who doesn't eat the typical Chinese delicacies such as chicken feet or pig's trotters, had a small piece of the fleshy, succulent meat. There was none of the "feet-taste" that I so detest. The thick wad of crispy skin crackled when biting into it.

The Paulaner Sausage Pan ($25), with 5 different sausages, Nurnberger, Cheese Sausage, Debreziner, Pork Sausage and the Spicy Kolbaz Sausage was my favourite main. I love sausages (I once told a friend that I love eating sausages, which was a major mistake, because I've forever been called the "sausage girl" since). We switched the Sauerkraut with Mash Potatoes, but that turned out to be a mistake. The mash potatoes tasted like it was straight out of a premix box.

The last main dish we ordered was the Cordon Bleu Pork Escalope ($27.50) filled with Ham and Cheese. We switched the French Fries with Steamed Vegetables to mix up the protein-centered meal. The escalope was tender and moist, with a golden crispy crust.

The ham was not the typical picnic ham variety, but the meaty, chunky type.

We also shared 2 soups, one Hearty Goulash Soup ($10.50), lightly spiced and very rustic. The beef was stewed so long that even toothless, denture-wearing oldies can enjoy the almost-disintegrated beef pieces.

And we also shared a Bavarian Creamy Mushroom Soup with Fresh Herbs ($9). This was nice, if not for the sour cream after-taste that we all didn't take to.

The Bread was served with Pate and Softened Butter. Bread was plain but soft and fluffy, pate was fresh and smooth.

A quick note: it's not advisable to sit in the air-conditioned area of the lower floor with the brewery, as you'll risk having the distinctive pungent smell of yeast linger in your hair and food. You can choose between the open air area of the first floor for people-watching while nursing an ice-cold beer and the air-conditioned restaurant on the second floor if dining.
